A day built around one meal
There’s a rhythm to travel that often pulls you toward the grandest sights, whether it’s the verdant depths of a place like Waimea Valley or the dramatic scale of Waimea Canyon State Park. But sometimes, the best discoveries are made in the quieter moments, like an afternoon stretched out on the Big Island. I found myself in Waimea town recently, mostly to run a few errands at the Parker Ranch Center and simply enjoy the cooler upcountry air. As a home cook, I appreciate places that do simple things well, and that’s precisely what drew me to Yum Yum Yoon’s Kitchen Korean.
It’s not a place that screams for attention; tucked away in the shopping center, its charm is in its straightforwardness. What you get here is consistent, comforting Korean food, prepared with a warmth that suggests a true understanding of what makes a dish satisfying. The menu is expansive but easy to navigate, featuring classic combo plates and specials that cater to just about any craving.
I’m a fan of variety, so the ANY TWO CHOICES combo plate ($18.95) caught my eye. I opted for the BBQ Chicken and Meat Jun, a great way to sample their execution. The BBQ Chicken was tender, with a sweet-savory glaze that wasn't cloying, and the Meat Jun, thinly sliced beef dipped in egg batter, was perfectly savory and delicate. Both came with generous scoops of rice, a hearty macaroni salad, and some fresh steamed vegetables – a truly complete meal. This is where you see the care; nothing feels mass-produced.
Another standout, for those who appreciate robust flavors, is the BBQ Pork ($15.50). It's got that perfect balance of char and marinade, juicy and deeply flavorful. My wife, who often leans towards something crisp, was quite happy with her Pork Katsu ($15.50). The breading was light and crunchy, the pork moist inside, hitting all the right notes for a well-executed katsu. If you’re looking for something with a bit more of an aromatic kick, the SEAFOOD SOFT TOFU SOUP ($16.95) is a soothing bowl, rich with seafood essence and silky tofu.
For a truly classic Korean experience, you can’t go wrong with their KALBI (short rib) Mini Plate ($15.95). The short ribs are cut just right, marinated long enough to be incredibly tender and full of that distinctive sweet-and-garlic flavor. And if you're a fan of dumplings, their Fried Man Doo (available in combos or as a plate) are crisp pockets of savory goodness, perfect for a little extra indulgence.
What makes Yum Yum Yoon’s worth a stop isn't just the delicious food, it's the palpable sense of consistent quality and value. It’s the kind of place you can rely on for a solid meal after a day of exploring the local sights or simply running errands. There’s no pretense, just honest cooking that nourishes and satisfies. Next time you're in Waimea, looking for something genuinely good, give Yum Yum Yoon’s Kitchen Korean a try. It’s a warm welcome in a town that already feels like one.
