A day built around one meal
Okay, y'all, let me tell you about my impromptu trip to Roanoke! I was actually visiting my bestie, Sarah, who recently moved there. She's been raving about the hiking, so we spent the morning tackling Mill Mountain Park. The views were incredible, especially from the Mill Mountain Star! After all that exertion, we were STARVING. Sarah knows I'm always on the hunt for amazing eats, and she did NOT disappoint.
She steered me toward Viet Sub, a super unassuming little sandwich shop specializing in Vietnamese banh mi. Honestly, from the outside, it's a no-frills kinda place, but the outdoor seating was perfect for a sunny afternoon. And the *smell*? Forget about it. That's when I knew I was in for a treat.
Now, I'm a banh mi enthusiast, so I take my sandwiches seriously. And Viet Sub? They GET it. The menu is straightforward, focusing on fresh ingredients and authentic flavors. We decided to go a little crazy and ordered a few things to share. First up, "The Beast." Seriously, with a name like that, how could we not? For $8.29, you get a glorious combination of Vietnamese ham, honey glazed pork, BBQ pork, and chicken. Talk about a flavor explosion! Each of the meats was perfectly seasoned, and the pickled daikon radish and carrots added the perfect crunch and tang.
Next, we went for the classic Honey Glazed Pork ($6.50). The pork was sweet, savory, and ridiculously tender. The bread was also toasted perfectly, with a crispy crust and a soft, chewy interior. We also snagged a Veggie banh mi ($5.50) and added fried tofu. I am NOT vegetarian but it was still so flavorful because of the mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickled daikon radish, carrots, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeno pepper, and peanut sauce.
While we were chowing down, we discussed our next adventure. Sarah suggested we check out the Roanoke River Overlook. Apparently, the views are stunning! We'll definitely have to do that before I leave.
Viet Sub is the real deal. It's simple, it's delicious, and it's affordable. The people are friendly, and the banh mi is top-notch. If you're ever in Roanoke, do yourself a favor and check it out. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you. I know I will be back the next time I’m in Roanoke. I already have a craving for their BBQ Pork ($6.50).
Plus, Roanoke is such a cool little city. I loved exploring Mill Mountain Park, and I can't wait to see more. It's the perfect weekend getaway spot… and now I know exactly where to go for lunch!
