A day built around one meal
I was in Atlanta last weekend, mostly running errands and visiting a friend who recently moved south. After a long Saturday exploring Piedmont Park and enjoying the unseasonably warm weather, I was ready for a good meal, something that felt both satisfying and reasonably healthy. True Food Kitchen, with its promise of health-conscious fare, caught my eye. It felt like exactly what I needed.
Walking in, the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. The "eco-chic" description is spot on; it's stylish without being pretentious. I was seated quickly and took a look at the menu, which had a surprising number of tempting options. Honestly, deciding was the hardest part.
I ended up starting with the Spicy Pineapple Margarita ($14.00). The fresh jalapeño added a delightful kick that played beautifully with the sweetness of the pineapple. It was a far cry from the sugary messes you sometimes get with margaritas. For my main course, I opted for one of the daily specials, a grilled fish dish with seasonal vegetables. It was expertly prepared, the fish perfectly cooked and the vegetables vibrant and flavorful. I appreciated that the dish wasn't drowning in sauce or oil; the natural flavors really shone through.
What impressed me most about True Food Kitchen was their commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients and the thoughtful execution of each dish. It's clear that someone in the kitchen understands how flavors work together and cares about the final product. It reminded me of some of the reasons why I love home cooking.
Even though I was quite full, I couldn't resist trying a dessert. The Flourless Chocolate Cake ($10.65) with vegan vanilla ice cream was calling my name. It was rich, decadent, and surprisingly light. The organic TCHO chocolate was intense, and the almond cacao nibs provided a pleasing textural contrast. I also snuck a bite of my friend’s Strawberry Passion Fruit Tart ($9.75), which had a lovely balance of sweet and tart.
Before heading back to my friend's place, I was thinking about how a trip to the Georgia Aquarium would be a great place to bring the kids, and I definitely want to explore the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park next time I'm in town.
True Food Kitchen isn't the cheapest option, but it delivers on its promise of delicious, health-conscious food in a comfortable setting. If you're looking for a satisfying meal that won't leave you feeling sluggish, I highly recommend giving it a try. It's a place where you can enjoy your food and feel good about what you're eating.
