Feature Story
A day built around one meal
I found myself in Trenton the other day, mostly running errands and stretching my legs after a long drive. I'd been meaning to visit Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary, and figured I’d make a day of it. After wandering the Sanctuary's peaceful trails, I realized I was famished, and the sign for Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound caught my eye. "Rough-&-ready boiled lobster dinners & other New England seafood in rustic environs," it proclaimed. That sounded exactly like what I needed.
It’s not fancy, but it doesn’t pretend to be. This is a place where the focus is squarely on fresh seafood, prepared simply and served without fuss. You can smell the briny air and the faint scent of woodsmoke as you walk up, and the sounds of happy diners fill the air. I immediately felt comfortable.
I started with a cup of their Clam Chowder ($4.50). It was creamy, rich, and full of clams – exactly what you want on a cool Maine day. For my main course, I decided on the classic Hot Lobster Roll ($26.95). The lobster meat was incredibly fresh and sweet, piled high on a toasted roll with just a touch of butter. No filler, no fuss, just pure lobster flavor. I also sampled the Cole Slaw ($7.50), a simple creamy mix that cut through the richness of the lobster perfectly.
My friend joined me and opted for the Steamed Clams & Mussels ($24.95). The aroma alone was intoxicating. They arrived in a large pot, bathed in a flavorful broth. He declared them perfectly cooked, each bite a taste of the ocean. He added a side of Salt Potatoes ($7.95) and declared it a perfect match.
While we ate, I couldn't help but think about how close we were to Acadia National Park. It’s easy to imagine grabbing a lobster roll here before heading off for a hike or a scenic drive along Park Loop Road. Or, if you're looking for a quieter escape, Knowlton Park, just a short drive away, offers beautiful views of the water.
The menu offers plenty of other tempting options, including Lobster Stew ($18.95), Crab Cakes ($18.95), and even Lobster Mac N' Cheese ($29.95). They also have a selection of Beer, Wine & Soft Drinks to wash it all down. And if you have room for dessert, the Blueberry Pie ($6.95) looked divine, though I was too full to indulge.
Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound isn't trying to reinvent the wheel. It's a classic Maine seafood spot that delivers exactly what it promises: fresh, delicious seafood in a relaxed, unpretentious setting. If you find yourself in the area, it's well worth a stop for a taste of authentic Maine.
