A day built around one meal

Stretching a road trip north, I’d spent the morning enjoying the quiet trails of Aroostook State Park. There’s something restorative about the deep woods and crisp air up in The County. By lunchtime, I was ready for something substantial, something honest, and preferably something that felt like a warm hug. That’s when I remembered hearing about The Maple Pig in Presque Isle.

Driving into town, past the historic brick facade of The Forum and with Riverside Park beckoning for a post-meal stroll, I found The Maple Pig. From the moment I stepped inside, the aroma of smoked meats and warm dough promised good things. It’s the kind of place that feels lived-in and welcoming, not trying too hard, just doing good food consistently. As a longtime home cook, I appreciate when a kitchen clearly understands its ingredients and knows how to make them shine without unnecessary fuss.

Their menu leans into the 'pig' in their name with delightful creativity. I started with the Maple Pigs in a Blanket (6) ($8.00). What makes these stand out isn't just the mini all-beef hot dogs, but the maple dough they're wrapped in and then toasted in a brick oven. That hint of sweetness in the dough, combined with the savory dog, is a clever touch that makes a simple appetizer feel special. I also couldn't resist the Pork Cracklin's ($8.00), opting for the 'Sap Sucker' seasoning. These weren't just greasy fried skins; they were perfectly crisp, airy, and the seasoning had a fantastic balance of sweet and savory that kept me reaching for more. The Pickle Fries ($8.00), with their homemade ranch, were another unexpectedly addictive starter—crispy, tangy, and a perfect palate wake-up.

For the main event, The Maple Pig truly delivers. Their Pickled Pork & Rye ($5.00), a daily special, offered a taste of something distinctively Maine, a hearty, tangy bite that makes you understand why certain regional dishes endure. But I was really drawn to their sandwiches. The Aroostook County Tenderloin ($14) caught my eye immediately. This isn’t your average deli sandwich. It features thick-sliced, seasoned, and smoked bologna—yes, bologna, but elevated—with smoked gouda, BBQ sauce, and coleslaw on Texas toast. The smoked bologna provides a rich, almost pastrami-like depth, beautifully complemented by the creamy gouda and the bright crunch of the slaw. It’s a testament to using humble ingredients extraordinarily well.

If you're in the mood for a burger that means business, the Brisket Burger ($18) is a revelation. It’s a 1/3 lb. of their ground smoked brisket, reverse-seared, topped with Cooper® and smoked cheddar cheeses, their homemade maple bourbon bacon jam, and a raspberry-chipotle BBQ sauce on a brioche bun. Every component sings—the tender, smoky brisket, the melting cheeses, and that fantastic sweet-savory-spicy jam and sauce. It’s a masterclass in balancing rich flavors without overpowering the star ingredient.

The Maple Pig is more than just a place to eat; it’s a spot where you feel the care and consideration in every dish. The execution is spot-on, the flavors are bold and comforting, and the prices feel fair for the quality you receive. If you find yourself up in Presque Isle after a hike, or just stretching out a road trip, looking for truly satisfying food that sticks to your ribs in the best possible way, do yourself a favor and stop by. You’ll leave feeling well-fed and ready to take on whatever The County has in store.
