Feature Story
A day built around one meal
Okay, y'all, I just had the BEST day in Birmingham! My bestie, Sarah, moved there last year, and I finally made the trek for a weekend visit. After hitting up Vulcan Park and Museum (those views are seriously breathtaking!), my stomach started rumbling. Sarah suggested we grab a bite at The Essential, a trendy cafe she'd been dying to try. And let me tell you, it lived up to the hype!
The Essential is exactly what it sounds like: essential! It's a trendy contemporary American cafe offering lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, plus specialty cocktails. As soon as we walked in, I loved the vibe—totally relaxed and chic.
First Impressions & Must-Try Bites
We started with a few snacks to share. The SOURDOUGH BREAD ($7.00) with Rodolphe Le Meunier's French butter was simple perfection. I'm a sucker for good bread, and this was next-level. We also grabbed the ARANCINI ($8.00), those crispy rice balls were addictively good, especially with the Calabrian chili sauce giving it a perfect kick. They also brought out the focaccia bread ($7.00). If you like parmesan, you will be in heaven!
For my main course, I went with the SPAGHETTI ($22.00). 'Cacio e pepe', spelt flour, miso butter, sunflower seeds, zanzibar peppercorns. I mean, how could I not? It was so flavorful and comforting. Sarah opted for the CHEESEBURGER ($22.00), made with two smashed dry aged bear creek beef patties and sharp american cheddar cheese. She let me steal a bite, and it was seriously amazing – juicy, cheesy, and everything you want in a burger.
Beyond the Plate: A Birmingham Adventure
What I love about The Essential is that it's perfectly situated for exploring Birmingham. Before Sarah and I met up, I spent the morning wandering through the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The Japanese Garden was my favorite. After lunch, we walked to Railroad Park Foundation to enjoy the sunny afternoon. So peaceful and green!
Final Verdict: Go Now!
If you're looking for a delicious and memorable meal in a cool setting, The Essential is a MUST. From the friendly staff to the creative menu, everything about this place is on point. Next time you're in Birmingham, maybe after a visit to the iconic Vulcan statue or a stroll through Railroad Park, make sure to carve out some time to treat yourself to The Essential. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you! Oh, and I already told Sarah I'm coming back soon for the Half Chicken Piri Piri ($32.00) – it looked incredible!
