A day built around one meal
Okay, friends, let me tell you about my impromptu trip to Madison! I came down to visit my friend, Sarah, who just moved there, and we hit up Thrill Factory Entertainment. I'm not gonna lie, all that axe throwing and laser tag works up an appetite. So, naturally, we needed a plan to refuel.
Sarah had heard whispers of a hidden gem called Thai Basil, a "humble strip-mall counter serve offering Thai specialties for carryout or delivery," according to Google. Honestly, I'm always a little skeptical of strip mall finds, but trust me on this one – it’s legit.
Thai Basil: More Than Meets the Eye
Thai Basil isn’t fancy. You won’t find elaborate décor or a sprawling dining room. But what you WILL find is incredibly delicious, authentic Thai food served up with a smile. We decided to order a bunch of appetizers to share. First up were the Crispy Spring Rolls ($8.95). Perfectly fried, not greasy at all, and that sweet and sour sauce? Divine! We also grabbed the Chicken Pot Stickers ($9.95), which came with this mind-blowing spicy sauce that had just the right amount of kick. Sarah insisted we get the Crab Rangoon ($9.95), and I'm so glad we did. Crispy, creamy, and totally addictive. Finally, we tried the Paradise Wings ($11.95)—crispy wings covered in a sweet and spicy glaze that was absolutely delicious. We also ordered the Fried Tofu for $8.95. The tofu was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, a great contrast. The peanut sauce was also amazing.
I was also tempted by the Isaan Sausage ($10.95), but we figured we should save something for next time. And trust me, there WILL be a next time!
A Madison Mini-Adventure
Madison is such a cool city! While we were waiting for our Thai Basil order (which, by the way, was lightning fast), we were looking at a map and thinking of other places to visit. We almost popped over to Vilas (Henry) Park for a stroll by the lake after eating, but we were too full. I've heard it's beautiful, though! We also considered driving up to Olbrich Botanical Gardens. I've seen pictures, and those gardens are seriously stunning.
My Verdict
Look, I eat a *lot* of food. And I can honestly say that Thai Basil is one of those places that just gets it right. The food is flavorful, the portions are generous, and the prices are more than reasonable. If you're ever in Madison, especially after a fun day of axe throwing, do yourself a favor and hit up this little gem. You won't regret it!
Seriously, grab some Thai Basil for takeout and head to the park for a picnic. You'll thank me later!
