A day built around one meal

I was in Albuquerque last weekend, stretching the legs on a long drive and running a few errands. After picking up some essentials at the Patio Market Old Town Albuquerque – I always find unique items there – my stomach started rumbling. I wasn't looking for anything fancy, just solid, honest food. That's when I spotted Taqueria Mexicana.

From the outside, it's unassuming, the kind of place you might drive right past. But I've learned to trust my gut, and something told me this was the real deal. Inside, the menu is straightforward, focusing on classic Mexican dishes. No fusion, no foams, just straightforward deliciousness. And after a long drive, that's exactly what I needed.

I started with a couple of tacos. The Bauta ($2.00) was a standout – perfectly seasoned meat, fresh cilantro, and a generous squeeze of lime. The Taco Gallo ($2.00) was equally impressive, boasting a depth of flavor that belied its simple ingredients. You can really taste the quality of the meat.

For something more substantial, I opted for the Adobada Plate ($9.75). The pork was tender, marinated in a rich, slightly spicy adobo sauce, and served with rice, beans, and warm tortillas. It's the kind of plate that sticks to your ribs and leaves you feeling satisfied. My partner tried the Carnitas Plate ($11.00) and was equally impressed, saying that the pork was crispy on the outside and juicy inside. We also ordered a side of meat ($4.75), because we wanted to try more options.

What I appreciate about Taqueria Mexicana is its commitment to quality and value. The portions are generous, the prices are reasonable, and the food is consistently good. They also have Mexican sodas available. I personally love the Bottled Cokes, which are $4.00 each. I also like that they sell their red or green salsa in 16oz cups for $5.50. That's a great value that allows you to enjoy their delicious homemade salsas at home with your own dishes.

While I was in the area, I also took a stroll through Old Town Albuquerque. It's always a nice way to unwind and soak in the local atmosphere. Later, I considered heading over to Coronado Center for some shopping, but my food coma won out.

If you're looking for authentic, no-nonsense Mexican food in Albuquerque, Taqueria Mexicana is worth a visit. It's the kind of place where you can relax, enjoy a good meal, and feel like you're getting a true taste of the local culture. It's not fancy, but it's real, and that's what matters most.
