A day built around one meal
On a recent day trip to Cozumel, after a leisurely morning browsing the shops and enjoying the ocean breeze at Plaza Punta Langosta, I found myself with a few hours to fill. My stomach was starting to grumble, and I was in the mood for something truly local—a place where the food spoke for itself, unburdened by fanfare. A tip from a friendly shop owner pointed me towards Taquería El Mexicano, a spot I'd passed before but hadn't yet tried.
Stepping into Taquería El Mexicano, the first thing you notice is the steady hum of local life. It's not a fancy place; plastic tables and chairs, a busy open kitchen, and the inviting smell of grilled meat tell you everything you need to know. This is a working taquería, a place where people come for consistent, honest food. It’s exactly what I look for when I’m trying to get a feel for a place, a moment to just soak in the local rhythm.
I started with a classic: the Pastor taco ($28). The pork, shaved directly from a vertical trompo, was perfectly marinated, with that signature sweet and savory balance and a hint of pineapple. It’s a dish I’ve made countless times at home, so I appreciate the craft here—the way the edges caramelize just right, keeping the meat juicy. Next up, I tried the Suadero ($30), slow-cooked beef brisket that practically melts in your mouth, rich without being greasy. For those who like a bit of everything, the Campechano ($30), a mix of suadero and longaniza (Mexican sausage), is a revelation. The smoky, spicy longaniza adds a lovely kick that complements the tender beef.
For the more adventurous, and I often am, the Tripa ($40) is a must-try. Cooked until wonderfully crispy, it offers a satisfying texture and deep, savory flavor—definitely not for the faint of heart, but incredibly rewarding. I also couldn't resist the Lengua ($35), incredibly tender and flavorful beef tongue, testament to careful preparation. To wash it all down, an Agua de Jamaica ($30) from their "Aguas De Sabor 100% Naturales" menu was perfectly tart and refreshing, a welcome counterpoint to the rich meats.
The beauty of a place like Taquería El Mexicano lies in its simplicity and execution. The tortillas are fresh, the meats are seasoned just so, and the salsas—from mild to fiery—are vibrant and clearly made in-house. Don't skip an Orden De Cebollas Cambray ($10), grilled spring onions that add a smoky, sweet punch to any taco. The prices are incredibly fair, especially given the quality. This is the kind of spot that grounds you, offering a reliable, comforting meal that feels deeply authentic.
After a morning exploring downtown, finding a spot like this makes a day trip truly memorable. It's the perfect fuel-up, whether you're planning to head further south to explore the rustic charm of Coconuts or gearing up for a family adventure at Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park. Taquería El Mexicano offers more than just tacos; it offers a taste of Cozumel's heart, a genuine experience that will stick with you long after the last bite. For any traveler looking for real Mexican flavors, delivered with no pretense and full of flavor, this taquería is a necessary stop.
