A day built around one meal
Okay, guys, you know I love a good day trip, and this weekend I found myself in West Allis! A follower told me about Oniomania, and I had to check out the vintage treasures. Seriously, I could spend hours sifting through all the cool stuff there.
All that treasure hunting made me hungry, so I decided to grab a bite nearby. That's when I discovered Sze Chuan Restaurant (they describe themselves as a "Casual Sichuan outpost for Chinese-American dining from crab rangoon to pork intestine"). The description alone intrigued me, and I am SO glad I went in.
First off, let's talk about the menu. It's HUGE! They have everything from classic Crab Rangoon to more adventurous dishes like… well, let's just say "pork intestine." I decided to play it relatively safe (this time!) and went with a few recommendations.
The Mapo Tofu ($14.95) was an absolute standout. Silky, flavorful tofu in a perfectly balanced spicy sauce – I could eat it every day! I also tried the Dan Dan Noodles ($12.95), which were so rich and savory. The portion was generous, making it a steal for lunch. My friend ordered the Pork Lo Mein ($14.95) and was impressed. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the pork was tender and flavorful.
But here’s what *really* sets Sze Chuan apart: They have so many variations on tofu! I’m talking Mapo Tofu with Ground Pork ($16.95), Crispy Salted Fried Tofu ($15.95), Homestyle Tofu ($16.95), and even Fish Filet with Mapo Tofu ($16.95). Tofu lovers, this is your place!
West Allis surprised me. After my delicious lunch at Sze Chuan, I was energized for more exploring. I’d heard about the great work that Friends of Firefly Grove Park does, so I swung by to see the latest improvements to the community gardens. Later, after a relaxing stroll through Three Bridges Park, I made a point of stopping back at Oniomania before heading home. All in all, it was a great day.
So, if you're ever in the West Allis area, maybe after checking out Oniomania or getting some fresh air at Three Bridges Park, make sure you pop into Sze Chuan Restaurant. Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you—the food is seriously delicious. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you! I'm already planning my next visit. Maybe I'll be brave and try the pork intestine next time!
