A day built around one meal
I found myself in Downtown Santa Monica last week, catching up with an old college friend I hadn't seen in ages. After a good long chat and a stroll, I decided to grab a bite before heading home. As the afternoon softened into evening, the thought of something fresh and comforting settled in. I’d heard whispers about a spot called Sushi King, tucked away from the main bustle.
From the outside, Sushi King is just as its Google description suggests: a "smallish dinner-only sushi joint with standard rolls & select combination offers." It’s unassuming, the kind of place you might walk past if you weren't looking. But sometimes, those are the best finds, aren't they? Stepping inside, the atmosphere is straightforward and clean – no pretense, just the quiet hum of a kitchen doing its work. It doesn't shout its tagline, "The King of Sushi," but rather lets its food do the talking.
What I appreciate about a place like Sushi King is its commitment to consistency. There's a confidence that comes from years of doing things well, without needing to reinvent the wheel. It’s about careful execution and fresh ingredients, which, for a longtime home cook like me, is the bedrock of any good meal. I'm less interested in fleeting trends and more in understanding *why* a dish works, and here, it’s clear.
I started with the King Combination (22.00), curious to see how they’d showcase their namesake. It arrived with a generous assortment: Tuna, Halibut, Salmon, Shrimp, Octopus, Egg, Surf Clam, Mackerel, along with three Cucumber Rolls and three Tuna Rolls. Each piece of fish was clearly fresh, cut with precision, and had that clean, oceanic taste you hope for. The rice was perfectly seasoned and held its shape without being gummy – a crucial detail often overlooked. It wasn't flashy, but every bite was a testament to solid technique.
For those who prefer cooked options, or a mix, their combination dinners are a strong suit. The B. Teriyaki and Sashimi (23.00), with a choice of Chicken or Beef, looked incredibly satisfying at a neighboring table. I opted for a smaller taste of their cooked fare with a side of Tempura (20.00), choosing the Shrimps and Vegetables. The batter was light, crisp, and golden, without any hint of grease, letting the natural sweetness of the shrimp and crispness of the vegetables shine through. It’s a simple dish, but so often poorly done; here, it was a delight.
I also sampled the Tekka Don (23.00), which is essentially a tuna bowl. The quality of the tuna was once again front and center, sliced generously over perfectly seasoned sushi rice. It’s a beautiful, focused dish that highlights the ingredient. And for anyone avoiding fish, or just wanting something green, the Vegetable Combination (20.00), with its vegetable salad, miso soup, and an array of vegetable, asparagus, and cucumber rolls, is a thoughtful and well-executed offering.
After a filling and satisfying meal, I decided to take a slow walk towards the coast. The evening air was cool and invigorating. Walking along, I could see the lights of the Santa Monica Pier twinkling, and the Ferris wheel at Pacific Park a colorful beacon against the darkening sky. It's a quintessential Santa Monica experience, and finding a reliable, quality spot like Sushi King made the day feel perfectly rounded.
Sushi King isn't trying to reinvent sushi; it’s simply doing it well. If you’re in Santa Monica, perhaps after a day exploring Downtown or enjoying the seaside attractions, and you’re looking for a consistently good, unpretentious meal that respects tradition and fresh ingredients, you’d do well to pull up a seat here. It’s a place that understands that sometimes, the best flavors come from careful hands and a commitment to the classics.
