A day built around one meal
I had a free Saturday and a few errands to run in central Phoenix, so I decided to make a day of it. After a calming stroll through the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix, I felt a craving for something light and flavorful. Sushiholic, with its bright, modern look, caught my eye. I was ready for lunch.
First impressions matter, and Sushiholic's atmosphere is immediately welcoming. It's clean, airy, and a definite step up from your average neighborhood sushi joint. The menu is extensive, but not overwhelming, with a focus on both classic sushi and creative house maki rolls.
I started with a couple of smaller plates to get a feel for the kitchen. The Fried Calamari Leg ($8.00) was crispy, tender, and perfectly seasoned – a generous portion that disappeared quickly. I also opted for the classic Edamame ($4.50), served hot and salted. Simple, but satisfying.
For the main event, I wanted to try something unique. The "**" designations next to several items on the menu caught my attention. The server explained that these were signature items, so I went with the Spoon Sampler ($20.00). This included a sampling of the Kiwi Salmon, Yellowtail Grapefruit, and White Tuna Orange. The presentation alone was worth the price of admission. Each bite was an explosion of flavor. The Kiwi Salmon, with its Japanese dressing, was particularly memorable – the sweetness of the kiwi balanced perfectly with the richness of the salmon.
I also couldn't resist the Seared Salmon Wrap ($13.00). This was another hit – the seared salmon, avocado, and spicy crab mix worked beautifully together, all tied together with the ponzu sauce. It was a symphony of textures and tastes.
Looking at the menu, I was also tempted by the sound of the Tunacado ($16.00) and the Hirame Truffle ($17.00). Next time, I suppose.
The service was attentive and friendly. The staff seemed genuinely passionate about the food, which is always a good sign. Prices are reasonable, especially considering the quality and creativity of the dishes. It's a great spot if you want to treat yourself without breaking the bank.
Located near the Japanese Friendship Garden, it's also close to other Phoenix attractions. You could easily spend a morning at Enchanted Island Amusement Park, then head over to Sushiholic for a relaxing lunch. Or, after a visit to Arizona Falls, you could grab a bite before heading home.
Sushiholic offers a refreshing take on Japanese cuisine. If you're looking for sushi that's a little bit different, a little bit more exciting, I highly recommend giving it a try. It's become one of my favorite spots in the area, and I can't wait to go back.
