A day built around one meal
I was stretching a road trip down the coast recently, making a pit stop in San Diego to catch up with an old friend. After a good walk through Seaport Village, taking in the bay and the unique shops, my appetite was definitely in gear. San Diego has plenty of flash, but sometimes, after a day on your feet, what you really want is something hearty and unpretentious. That's how I found myself at Sunrise Buffet.
From the street, it’s exactly what the Google description promises: a “no-frills spot” where “locals line up for all-you-can-eat buffets of basic Chinese & American fare.” And that's exactly its charm. There’s no pretense here, just a steady stream of people looking for a satisfying meal. The tagline, "All You Can Eat Seafood, Sushi and Dim Sum," sets the stage for a wide variety, but it’s the consistent execution of the basics that truly stands out.
Walking in, the steam tables stretch out, brimming with options. I decided to dive into their lunch buffet, which at $7.99 Monday through Saturday (11:00 am - 4:00 pm) is an absolute steal. For dinner, prices go up slightly, like the $11.99 Monday through Thursday dinner buffet (4:00 pm - 9:00 pm), which is still excellent value. They even have clear pricing for kids, with children under 3 eating free, and tiered rates for older kids, showing they’re truly set up for families.
I’m a home cook, and I appreciate when a dish delivers on its promise. Here, the General Tso's chicken has that perfect balance of crispiness and sauce – not too sweet, with just enough heat to keep it interesting. The lo mein noodles are consistently fresh, not overcooked or greasy, which can be a buffet pitfall. And surprisingly, their steamed fish, often a simple white fish, is tender and flaky, avoiding the dry fate of many buffet seafood offerings.
Beyond the hot dishes, the sushi selection, while not high-end omakase, provides a fresh bite with your standard California rolls and nigiri options. Their dim sum corner, with offerings like steamed pork buns and potstickers, provides nice textural variety. What I appreciate most is the attention to keeping things fresh and replenished, ensuring that even during busy periods, the food doesn't sit too long.
This kind of place makes for a perfect anchor to a day of exploration. If you’ve spent the morning wandering the gorgeous grounds of Balboa Park, or exploring the historic buildings and artisan shops in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, you'll have worked up a real appetite. Sunrise Buffet is positioned perfectly to refuel you without emptying your wallet. And if you're planning a picnic or need food for the road, their Buffet To Go option is fantastic: $3.49/lb for lunch and $4.49/lb for dinner, or $7.49/lb for seafood and sushi, making it incredibly flexible.
Sunrise Buffet might not be reinventing the wheel, but it doesn't need to. It’s a dependable, comfortable spot that delivers exactly what it promises: a wide variety of well-prepared, satisfying food at an honest price. Sometimes, that’s exactly what you need after a long day of taking in all San Diego has to offer. It's the kind of place you'll find yourself returning to for a no-fuss, genuinely enjoyable meal.
