A day built around one meal
I was recently stretching a road trip into a long weekend, passing through Kill Devil Hills, NC. After spending a good chunk of the morning wandering through Destination Fun – a place that lives up to its name, offering a pleasant distraction from the usual grind – my stomach started rumbling. I wasn't looking for anything fancy, just solid, honest food. That's how I found myself pulling into Stoney Spencer's Shrimp Shack.
From the outside, Stoney Spencer’s looks precisely like what you'd hope for in a coastal shack. It has that laid-back, no-frills charm that immediately puts you at ease. Inside, it’s clean, bright, and smells faintly of fried seafood and salty air – a perfect combination. You get the sense that this is a place where locals eat and visitors feel instantly welcome, without any pretense. The staff, friendly and efficient, seemed to understand that people come here for good food, served simply.
My goal, naturally, was shrimp. I went straight for the Fried Shrimp Basket ($15.99), and it did not disappoint. The shrimp were perfectly cooked: plump, juicy on the inside, with a light, crispy breading that wasn't greasy. It's the kind of frying that requires attention and good oil management, and they nail it. It came with fries and hushpuppies, which were equally well-executed. The hushpuppies, in particular, had that satisfying balance of savory and a hint of sweetness, an essential Southern touch.
Wanting to try a broader range, I also ordered a 1/2 lb of Steamed Gulf Shrimp ($11.99), spiced just right – enough to give a kick without overpowering the natural sweetness of the shrimp. Dipping them in melted butter felt like a small, luxurious ritual. For a side, the Fried Pickles ($6.99) were a revelation. Thick-cut dill pickles, perfectly battered and fried until golden, served with their own tangy dipping sauce. They’re a testament to how simple ingredients, handled with care, can truly shine.
My dining companion, less of a seafood fiend, opted for the Carolina BBQ ($7.99). It was a generous portion of tender, pulled pork, tangy with a touch of heat from the accompanying hot sauce and a fresh, crisp slaw. It's a solid choice if you're not in the mood for seafood but still want something substantial and flavorful. We also shared a Puppy Basket ($5.99) of those fantastic corn-filled hush puppies, because, frankly, you can never have enough.
What truly impressed me about Stoney Spencer’s was the consistency and the honest approach to their cooking. Every dish tasted fresh, prepared with a clear understanding of what makes comfort food, well, comforting. They're not reinventing the wheel, but they're building a very sturdy, delicious wheel.
After that satisfying meal, I felt ready for more coastal exploration. A short drive away is Jockey’s Ridge State Park, where the massive sand dunes offer an incredible panorama – perfect for walking off a good meal and enjoying the unique landscape. Or, if you prefer something a bit more structured, Dowdy Park is nearby, providing green space and playgrounds, a great spot to relax for a bit, maybe with a leftover hushpuppy or two in hand. It’s this blend of natural beauty and down-to-earth local spots that makes Kill Devil Hills so appealing.
Stoney Spencer's Shrimp Shack isn't trying to be anything it's not. It's an unpretentious, reliable spot that delivers exactly what it promises: delicious, well-prepared seafood and classic American fare at fair prices. If you find yourself in Kill Devil Hills, perhaps after a morning of discovery at Destination Fun or preparing for an afternoon at Jockey's Ridge, and you're craving some genuine coastal comfort, this is the place to go. It’s the kind of spot you remember long after you've left, and eagerly anticipate visiting again.
