A day built around one meal
My latest road trip found me stretching a long drive into a leisurely weekend, and a detour brought me through Lake City. I’d heard whispers about The Fairy Forest, and after spending a charming morning meandering through its whimsical trails, my stomach was definitely ready for something substantial. Just a short drive away, tucked into a pleasant corner of town, I spotted Shoreline Cafe. From the outside, it looked like exactly what I was hoping for: a local spot, unpretentious, and promising real food.
Stepping inside, the aroma of coffee and grilling bread was instantly inviting. It's the kind of place that feels lived-in, comfortable, and clearly a hub for locals. There’s no fuss here, just a steady hum of friendly chatter and efficient service. You can tell a place is doing things right when it manages to be both busy and relaxed at the same time.
While I was definitely in for lunch, I glanced at their breakfast menu and made a mental note. An Egg, cheese + bacon sandwich for $4.75 is a clear winner for a solid, quick start to the day. And a good muffin ($3.25) or scone ($3.50) with a coffee is exactly what I look for when I want something simple but well-made. Their Plain or Everything bagel with cream cheese for $3.00 also caught my eye – sometimes, you just want the classics done right.
For my main course, I gravitated towards their panini selection. I’m a big believer that a good sandwich, executed properly, is one of life’s great pleasures. I opted for The Shoreline ($11.00), a hearty combination of chicken, bacon, tomato, red onion, garlic mayo, and Monterey Jack cheese. What makes it special isn't just the ingredients, but how they come together. The chicken was tender, the bacon crisp, and that garlic mayo? It brought everything into perfect balance, moistening the sandwich without overwhelming it. The bread was perfectly pressed, golden and crisp on the outside, yielding on the inside.
My dining companion chose The Beach ($10.50), with turkey, tomato, red onion, Monterey Jack, and a unique apple mayo. The apple mayo was a revelation – a subtle sweetness that brightened the turkey and cheese without being cloying. It’s a testament to a kitchen that understands how flavors play off each other. If you're feeling a bit adventurous, The Lagoon ($11.00) with its turkey, bacon, jalapenos, and garlic mayo offers a nice kick. And for the purists, or if you’re grabbing something simple for the kids, The Docks ($7.50) with just Monterey Jack and mild cheddar is a comforting classic.
Shoreline Cafe isn't just about good food; it’s about a feeling. It's the kind of place where you can fuel up before heading out to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. After lunch, I took a scenic drive around the Lake Missaukee Scenic Area, enjoying the crisp air and views that only northern Michigan can offer. I even made plans to check out the Cadillac Sound Garden on my way home, knowing I'd had a truly satisfying meal to carry me through.
In a world where so much food feels over-engineered or relies on trends, Shoreline Cafe stands out for its honest approach. They take quality ingredients, prepare them thoughtfully, and serve them up with care. It’s consistent, it’s comforting, and it just works. If you find yourself in Lake City, perhaps after a peaceful morning walk through The Fairy Forest or before exploring more of what the area has to offer, do yourself a favor and stop by Shoreline Cafe. You'll leave feeling well-fed and genuinely happy.
