A day built around one meal

I needed to pick up some supplies for a friend's garden, which meant a Saturday morning trek south to Homestead. I always try to turn errands into mini-adventures, and this time, the reward was Shiver's BBQ. I'd heard whispers about this long-standing, family-owned spot, and let me tell you, the rumors are true.

I spent the morning wandering through the Fruit & Spice Park, marveling at mango varieties I never knew existed. Later, feeling a bit like I'd stepped into a time warp at Coral Castle, I was definitely ready for some serious eats. And Shiver's delivered.

Walking in, it's the kind of place where you immediately feel comfortable. No frills, just the aroma of slow-smoked meats and happy chatter. The menu is packed with tempting options, and the prices are surprisingly reasonable. I was torn, but ultimately landed on the Choose 2 Combo ($21.99), opting for the spare ribs and brisket. Best decision ever. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender, with a perfect smoky char. And the brisket? Melt-in-your-mouth amazing.

They aren't shy with the portions either. My combo came with two sides, and I went for the mac and cheese and coleslaw – both solid choices. Other tempting menu items included the Burnt Ends ($18.99) which I saw another customer enjoying, and the Hickory Chicken Platter ($17.99). I also had my eye on the Sausage Bomb ($14.99) for next time.

Before heading back north, I considered a quick detour to Homestead Bayfront Park, but the food coma was real. Instead, I made a promise to return soon, maybe with a bigger group so we can try more of the menu.

Shiver's BBQ feels like a genuine find. It's not fancy, but it's authentic, delicious, and a total steal for the quality and quantity of food you get. If you're ever in the Homestead area, skip the chains and make a beeline for this barbecue gem. You won't regret it.
