A day built around one meal
I’ve always believed that a good meal can elevate any day, and that’s exactly what happened during a recent trip to Southwest Ranches. I was in the area running errands and, with a little time to spare, decided to finally visit Flamingo Gardens. Afterwards, I was hoping to find a relaxing place to grab a bite, and Shimuja Ramen caught my eye.
From the moment I stepped inside, I felt a sense of calm. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, a welcome contrast to the afternoon heat. The service was attentive without being intrusive, allowing me to settle in and peruse the menu at my own pace. It reminded me of the unhurried pace you find hiking at Long Key Natural Area & Nature Center, a place I find myself often when I need a break from the city.
I started with the Spicy Homemade Gyoza Dumplings (5) for $13.00. They were perfectly crisp on the outside, with a flavorful, slightly spicy filling that left me wanting more. I also tried the Crispy Shrimp Mayo (6) for $12.00, and they were an excellent light appetizer. For my main course, I decided on the Kagoshima Special ($22.00). The natural pork broth was rich and comforting, the pork belly was tender, and the thick wavy noodles had just the right amount of bite. The fried burdock added a unique, earthy flavor that I thoroughly enjoyed. My friend had the Chicken Paitan, for $19.00, and loved the yuzu chicken meatball.
Shimuja Ramen also offers a selection of Japanese Onigiri, and a variety of ramen from Hakata Tonkotsu ($17.00) to Tokyo Shoyu ($18.00). There are also some very intriguing-sounding Pork Buns ($10.00), and Tofu Buns ($9.00) on the menu.
What sets Shimuja Ramen apart, in my opinion, is their attention to detail. Everything, from the presentation of the dishes to the quality of the ingredients, is carefully considered. It’s clear that they take pride in what they do, and that passion shines through in every bite. It's the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and savor the moment, much like a leisurely float down the river at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park.
If you find yourself in the Southwest Ranches area, perhaps after a day spent exploring the local attractions, I highly recommend stopping by Shimuja Ramen. It’s a truly satisfying experience that I’m already looking forward to repeating.
