Feature Story
A day built around one meal
I was in New Orleans last week, stretching a road trip with a visit to an old college friend. On a particularly sunny afternoon, after a leisurely stroll through the expansive greenery of New Orleans City Park, taking in the picturesque oak trees and sculptures, my stomach started rumbling. We’d spent a good part of the morning exploring, and a casual, satisfying meal was exactly what the doctor ordered.
That’s how we found ourselves at Rosalita’s Backyard Tacos. From the street, it’s unassuming – a “funky eatery,” as their tagline puts it, but step around back, and you discover the heart of the place: a vibrant, welcoming outdoor seating area. It’s got that relaxed, communal feel, like you’ve just been invited to a friend’s barbecue, only with much better food and no expectation to help with the dishes. It’s exactly the kind of spot a seasoned home cook like myself appreciates – a place where the focus is clearly on good ingredients and solid execution, not fuss or pretense.
And the tacos? They deliver. They're not reinventing the wheel here, and that's a good thing. What they do is take familiar flavors and execute them well. The tortillas are fresh, the fillings are generously portioned and well-seasoned, and everything just… works. It’s a testament to the idea that sometimes, simple done right is exactly what you need. I always look for that foundational quality in a dish, the 'why it works,' and at Rosalita's, it's the balance and freshness.
To wash it down, their drink menu offers plenty of choices. My friend went for a crisp Modelo Especial Mex. ($5), while I, after much deliberation, settled on a PINEAPPLE-CILANTRO Margarita ($8). It was a surprisingly refreshing combination, the cilantro adding a subtle, herbaceous note that played beautifully with the sweet pineapple. If you prefer a classic, their CLASSIC Margarita for $7.50 is solid, or for a bit of a kick, the SPICY MARGARITA at $8.50 hit the spot for another diner near us. They also do a nice MEXICAN MULE for $7.50 if you’re more of a ginger beer fan, and their ROSE by the glass for $7 is a pleasant afternoon sipper. For beer enthusiasts, they carry local favorites like the Urban South Holy Roller IPA ($5).
Beyond the tacos, their nachos are also a popular choice, piled high with fresh toppings – perfect for sharing. It's the kind of place you can settle into for a while, enjoying the New Orleans breeze.
Rosalita's is a great anchor if you're exploring this side of the city. Whether you've just spent hours admiring the art collections at the New Orleans Museum of Art or you're planning a trip down to the historic charm of Jackson Square later, this spot offers a relaxed, delicious pause. It’s honest food in an honest setting, and sometimes, that’s just what you want.
For a meal that’s comforting, consistently good, and doesn’t break the bank, Rosalita’s Backyard Tacos is a dependable choice. It’s the kind of neighborhood gem you'll want to revisit, a true backyard escape right in the city.
