A day built around one meal
I found myself with a free Saturday in San Francisco, ostensibly to pick up a few things downtown I couldn't find anywhere else. But really, it was an excuse to wander. After a pleasant morning spent strolling through Golden Gate Park, enjoying the crisp air and vibrant scenery, my appetite started calling. I remembered hearing buzz about Roka Akor, tucked away near Union Square, and decided to see if the reality matched the hype. Turns out, it does.
Roka Akor strikes a sophisticated note from the moment you walk in. The atmosphere is modern and stylish, creating a welcoming space. I opted for a seat at the bar, wanting to get a feel for the cocktail scene, and wasn't disappointed. The wine list is extensive, with a range of options. I started with a glass of the Massican White Blend ($18) from Napa Valley. Crisp, refreshing, and the perfect way to kick off the meal.
Their menu is a well-curated selection of sushi, seafood, and steak, all prepared with a distinct Japanese influence. I started with the Yellowtail Sashimi with Yuzu Dressing. It was melt-in-your-mouth fresh. Next, I moved on to the grilled Chilean Sea Bass with Black Cod Marinade. The fish was perfectly cooked, flaky and moist, with a subtle sweetness. The price point is definitely elevated, but the quality justifies it.
Since I had plans to head over to PIER 39 later in the afternoon to watch the sea lions, I wanted something substantial to last me through the afternoon. I decided to try one of the items from the robata grill. I opted for the Skirt Steak with Wafu Dressing. The robata grill imparted a wonderful smoky flavor, and the Wafu dressing added a tangy counterpoint to the rich beef. It was expertly cooked to a perfect medium-rare. To pair with my meal, I selected the Ponzi Pinot Noir ($28) from Willamette Valley, Oregon. The earthy notes played well with the steak's smokiness.
I also wanted to sample some of their sushi. I tried a few pieces of their nigiri, opting for the Tuna and Salmon. Both were incredibly fresh and expertly prepared, a testament to the quality of their ingredients. For something a little different, I also tried one of the sakes, the Soto Junmai ($44), which I found to be very smooth.
Roka Akor isn't just about the food; it's about the experience. The service was attentive and professional, without being intrusive. The staff clearly knows the menu inside and out, and they're happy to offer recommendations or answer questions. It's the kind of place where you can settle in and enjoy a leisurely meal, savoring each bite and each moment.
If you're looking for a special occasion spot in San Francisco, or if you simply want to treat yourself to some exceptional Japanese cuisine, Roka Akor is well worth a visit. Just be prepared to open your wallet a little wider than usual. You're paying for quality, and in this case, you get what you pay for.
