A day built around one meal
I had a friend visiting from out of state, and we decided to spend a recent Saturday wandering around Old Town Albuquerque, soaking up the history and browsing the shops. By lunchtime, we'd worked up quite an appetite and decided to venture a little further afield. That's when we stumbled upon Range Café Wyoming, and I’m so glad we did.
The first thing you notice is the eclectic decor. It’s fun, a little funky, and immediately puts you at ease. It feels like a place that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but cares deeply about the food it serves.
We started with the Green Chile Strips ($8.95), which were perfectly crispy and had just the right amount of kick, served with a creamy green chile ranch. We also couldn't resist the Queso Chorizo ($13.95). The white chile con queso with chorizo was rich, flavorful, and disappeared quickly with the help of the blue and white corn chips.
For my main course, I decided on the Huevos Rancheros ($12.95). The eggs were cooked perfectly, the blue corn tortillas were tender, and the choice of chile (I went with green, of course) was spot-on. My friend opted for the Green Chile Chicken Egg-Chiladas ($14.95), and judging by how quickly she cleaned her plate, it was a definite winner. She loved the combination of shredded chicken, cheddar, and green chile.
I also noticed the couple at the next table sharing the Biscuits & Gravy Deluxe ($14.95). It looked absolutely divine, with a housemade buttermilk biscuit smothered in country-style sausage gravy, topped with eggs and green onions. I made a mental note to try that on my next visit.
Another enticing option was the Carne Adovada & Creamy Cheddar Grits ($14.95). The blend of savory and creamy, with the crispy onions, avocado, and cilantro, sounds like a symphony of flavors. And if you're in the mood for something sweet, the Stuffed French Toast ($13.95) with pastry cream and housemade fruit compote seemed very popular.
The service was friendly and attentive, without being intrusive. The pace was just right – not too rushed, not too slow. It was the kind of place where you can relax, enjoy your meal, and soak up the atmosphere.
After lunch, we considered a stroll through the ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden, but decided to save it for another day. We did swing by a few shops near Old Town Plaza though, before heading home.
Range Café Wyoming is more than just a restaurant; it's a neighborhood institution. It's a place where you can get a great meal at a reasonable price, surrounded by a warm and welcoming atmosphere. If you find yourself in Albuquerque, I highly recommend a visit. It's the perfect spot to fuel up before exploring the city's many attractions or simply to enjoy a delicious and comforting meal.
