Feature Story
A day built around one meal
I found myself in Atlanta recently, mostly running errands and visiting a friend. After a morning spent wandering through Piedmont Park, enjoying the sunshine and people-watching, I realized I was starving. I'd heard whispers about a unique spot nearby, a place called R. Thomas Deluxe Grill, and decided to give it a try.
Let me tell you, it's not what I expected. The Google description calls it a 'funky outdoor spot open 24/7 for organic menu of burgers & vegetarian fare amid greenery & birds.' That's accurate, but it doesn't quite capture the *feel* of the place. It's an oasis, a slightly chaotic but undeniably charming space filled with plants, colorful decorations, and the sounds of… well, birds.
Delicious and Different
The menu is extensive, and it took me a while to decide. Since I'm always up for trying something new, I started with the Chips Deluxe ($12.73). Organic tri-colored corn chips arrived piled high with white cheddar cheese, cilantro, and spicy chacha veggies. The raw hummus and salsa on the side were fresh and flavorful – a really satisfying appetizer. I also sampled the R's Wing Plate ($15.50), and the wings had a great char from the grill. The soy ginger sauce was a great recommendation from the friendly server.
For my main course, I opted for the Thomas Burger ($16.73). The grass-fed beef was cooked perfectly, and the 1000 island dressing added a nice tang. I appreciated the fresh romaine and tomato; it's clear they care about quality ingredients. My friend ordered R's Veggie Plate Combo ($17.25), and the portions were generous. The meatless loaf and the garlicky green beans were both standouts.
More Than Just Food
R. Thomas feels like a refuge from the city's hustle. I imagined the restaurant would make a great start or end to a day spent at the Georgia Aquarium or the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park, both a short drive away.
The prices are reasonable, especially considering the quality of the ingredients and the unique atmosphere. And, honestly, the fact that they're open 24/7 is a real draw. Who *doesn't* want a decent meal at 3 a.m. sometimes?
If you're looking for something different, a place with character and food that surprises you in a good way, give R. Thomas Deluxe Grill a try. It's a memorable experience, and I'm already planning my next visit.
