A day built around one meal
I had a free Saturday and a few errands to run in Minneapolis, so I decided to make a day of it. After picking up what I needed, I strolled through the serene Peace (Rock) Garden, taking a moment to appreciate the quiet amidst the city bustle. All that tranquility worked up an appetite, and I knew exactly where I wanted to go: Que Viet Village House.
I've been hearing about Que Viet for years, specifically about those legendary egg rolls. "Egg rolls, noodles & other Chinese-Vietnamese fare are what's on offer at this no-frills eatery," as their Google description puts it. And while the description is accurate, it doesn't quite capture the experience. It's more than just a no-frills eatery; it's a neighborhood institution serving up reliably tasty food at prices that won't break the bank.
Walking in, you immediately understand "no-frills." The focus is squarely on the food, and that's perfectly fine by me. I grabbed a table and scanned the menu, which is extensive. Of course, I had to start with the Egg Rolls (g) ($13.00 for a large order). Crispy, savory, and perfectly seasoned, they lived up to the hype. The filling was flavorful and the wrappers shatteringly crisp. I also decided to try the Garlic Nuoc Mam Wings ($13.50). The fish sauce glaze was a perfect balance of sweet, salty, and tangy, and the wings themselves were cooked just right.
Beyond the egg rolls and wings, the menu is packed with familiar favorites. The Cheese Puffs ($10.00) are another popular choice, and the Spring Rolls (g) ($7.00) looked fresh and inviting. I also spotted Oyster Wings ($13.50), which I'll definitely try on my next visit. I also saw Chicken Fingers ($9.50) on the menu, which sounded really good.
After lunch, I considered a walk through Mill Ruins Park to soak in some history, or perhaps a visit to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden to admire the art. But honestly, I was still savoring the flavors of Que Viet and decided to head home, already planning my next visit.
Que Viet Village House isn't trying to be trendy or fancy. It's just a solid, dependable spot serving up consistently good food at reasonable prices. If you're in the area and looking for a satisfying meal, especially some truly memorable egg rolls, I highly recommend stopping by. It's the kind of place that reminds you why you love food in the first place.
