A day built around one meal
San Diego always calls to me. This trip, I was just stretching out a road trip home, taking a scenic route and making a point to catch up with a college friend who lives nearby. We spent a good chunk of the morning wandering through Seaport Village, enjoying the bay breezes and the colorful shops. By lunchtime, my stomach was rumbling, not for anything fancy, but for something truly satisfying—the kind of straightforward, flavorful meal that sticks with you.
That's how I found myself at Palomino's Mexican and Seafood. Their tagline, "Come and Enjoy Fast, Quality Mexican Food," is refreshingly honest, and the Google description—a "straightforward counter serve with a long menu of Mexican standards"—hits the nail on the head. It's not about pretense here; it’s about good food, made right, without a lot of fuss. For a home cook like me, that often means finding the places where the basics are truly mastered.
My eyes immediately landed on the Carne Asada Fries ($6.70). Now, I’ve had my share of these, but what makes Palomino's version stand out is the balance. The fries themselves are golden and crisp, holding up beautifully under a generous blanket of melted cheese, perfectly seasoned carne asada, a dollop of cool sour cream, fresh guacamole, and a vibrant Mexican sauce. It’s a hearty dish, sure, but each component plays its part, preventing it from becoming a soggy, overwhelming mess. The char on the carne asada was just right, offering that smoky depth that makes you want to go back for another bite.
I also appreciate a good breakfast, even if I'm eating it later in the day. Their breakfast burritos caught my eye, especially the 2 Eggs, Chorizo & Potatoes option for $4.20. It’s the kind of substantial, savory wrap that could fuel you for a morning exploring Balboa Park’s museums or a walk through the botanical gardens. The chorizo here has a nice kick without being overly greasy, and the potatoes are tender, absorbing all those wonderful flavors.
Beyond the staples, Palomino's offers daily specials that are worth noting. I happened to be there on a Wednesday, and their Two Pastor Tacos for $4.50 were calling my name. The marinated pork was tender and flavorful, complemented by the fresh onion and cilantro—a testament to how a few simple, quality ingredients can create something truly memorable. And you can never go wrong starting with their Chips with Guacamole ($3.99); the guacamole is clearly made fresh, bright and creamy, a perfect foil to the savory dishes.
Even if you’re not in the mood for tacos, their Friday Chile Verde Plate ($4.95) offers another reason to visit. A good chile verde is all about the slow-cooked pork and a rich, tangy sauce, and Palomino’s delivers on that promise of comfort and flavor. It’s the kind of dish you crave after a busy day, perhaps after taking in the history and charm of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park.
Palomino's Mexican and Seafood isn't trying to reinvent the wheel, and that's precisely its strength. It's a reliable spot where the food is consistent, the prices are fair, and the flavors are genuinely satisfying. If you're looking for a taste of honest, well-made Mexican food that feels like a true San Diego staple, this is a place you'll want to stop.
