A day built around one meal
I found myself in Waukee the other day, mostly running errands and stretching my legs after a long drive. I had some time to kill, and after a stop at Playgrounds Cafe for the kids, I figured I deserved a little something for myself. That's when I stumbled upon Ninja Sushi Ramen. It's the kind of place that doesn't shout from the rooftops, but quietly beckons with the promise of something satisfying.
What struck me first was the variety on the menu. Sure, they have sushi (which I didn't try this time), but the ramen selection is where they really shine. The Ninja Ramen Bowl section is extensive. I opted for the Cha Shu Ramen ($16), drawn in by the promise of tender pork belly. The broth was rich and savory, coating the noodles perfectly, and the pork was melt-in-your-mouth tender. I also added a flavor egg ($2) for extra richness.
My friend, who joined me for lunch, went with the Veggie Ramen ($14). She's a big fan of vegetarian options, and she was impressed by the freshness of the vegetables and the depth of flavor in the broth. We also split an order of Shrimp Tempura Ramen ($18) because we were curious to see how they handled tempura in a ramen setting. The shrimp were perfectly crispy and didn't get soggy in the broth, which is a testament to the kitchen's execution. The tempura sauce was also delicious.
More Than Just Noodles
Beyond the specific dishes, what I appreciated most was the overall feeling of comfort. It's a casual spot, perfect for a quick lunch or a relaxed dinner. The prices are reasonable, especially considering the quality and portion sizes. You could easily make a meal out of ramen and a few add-ons. I was tempted to try some add-ons, like the kimchi ($3) or extra tempura shrimp ($3/pc), but I was already getting full.
I overheard another table raving about the Chicken Katsu Ramen ($17) and the Seafood Ramen ($17), so I've already made a mental note to try those next time. I'm also intrigued by the cold noodle options, like the Cha Shu Cold Noodle ($16) for a hot day. Maybe after a nice walk at nearby Triangle Park, I'll treat myself to some cold noodles.
While in Waukee, I took a drive through Triumph Park. I needed to stretch my legs after the meal, and there were others out enjoying the park. It's great that there are places to enjoy the outdoors nearby.
If you're looking for a no-frills, genuinely satisfying bowl of ramen in a relaxed setting, Ninja Sushi Ramen is worth a visit. It's not trying to be trendy or over-the-top; it's just focused on serving good food, consistently. And sometimes, that's exactly what you need.
