Feature Story
A day built around one meal
Okay, friends, let me tell you about my recent foodie adventure! I was actually in Red Bank to visit a friend who just moved into the area, and we spent the morning exploring Maple Cove. It was such a cute little park! After all that fresh air, my stomach was definitely rumbling. I'd heard whispers of a place called Nicholas Barrel & Roost, and let me tell you, the rumors are true!
First impressions matter, and this place nails it. The atmosphere is warm and inviting – exactly what I needed after a day of exploring. It's an "informal restaurant serving mainstays including burgers, pizzas & steaks, plus wines & cocktails," according to Google, but I'd argue it's so much more than that.
First Bites
We started with a few snacks to share (because who can choose just one?!). The Crispy Chicken Wings with White Sauce ($18) were seriously addictive. The sauce was creamy and tangy, and the wings were perfectly crispy. We also dove into the Fried Cheese Curds, served with their signature "Roost" Sauce ($16). Total game-changer! And because I'm a sucker for a good starter, we tried the House Baked Bread with House Made Butter & Sea Salt ($7.00) — simple, yet divine.
Diving Deeper
For my main course, I was torn between the steaks and the more inventive dishes, but the server recommended the Roasted Half Chicken, and I am SO glad I listened. At $28, it felt like a total steal – perfectly cooked chicken with root vegetables, mushrooms, and the creamiest whipped potatoes. My friend opted for the 14 oz Bone-In Pork Chop ($37), and let me tell you, it was cooked to perfection. Juicy, flavorful, and definitely a showstopper.
Before heading to dinner, we thought about playing some retro games at YESTERcades, but knew we'd want to relax after eating.
Standout Moments
What really sets Nicholas Barrel & Roost apart is their attention to detail. Even the simplest dishes felt elevated and special. I was especially impressed with the "NOT My Grandma's Crudite" ($20). Seasonal vegetables, whipped feta, and pepper hummus? Yes, please! It's a far cry from the limp carrots and celery sticks I remember from childhood. Another item I'd recommend is the French Onion soup ($15). The rich broth and perfectly melted cheese made it the ideal starter on a chilly evening.
If you're feeling fancy, they also have a raw bar with some amazing-sounding options, like the American Hackleback Sturgeon Caviar ($65) or the Grilled Octopus ($23). Maybe next time I’ll treat myself!
After our amazing dinner, we actually stopped at The Grove at Shrewsbury, just a short drive away. The shops were closed, but we enjoyed the window displays and beautiful landscaping.
Final Verdict
Nicholas Barrel & Roost is a must-try if you're in Red Bank. It's the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring the area. So, whether you're visiting Red Bank for the day or just looking for a fantastic meal, Nicholas Barrel & Roost is a solid choice. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you!
