A day built around one meal
I was in Hollywood this past Saturday, not for the glitz and glamour, but to help a friend track down some rather specific vintage film equipment near Universal CityWalk. After a morning navigating the energetic buzz and crowds, my stomach began rumbling for something beyond theme park fare. I wanted a good, honest meal, and that’s how I found Natalie Peruvian Seafood Restaurant.
Tucked away in a rather unassuming Hollywood strip mall, Natalie might not immediately catch your eye. The Google description, “Traditional Peruvian eatery serves a ceviche & seafood-heavy menu in a simple, strip-mall setting,” pretty much nails it. But don't let the modest exterior fool you. Inside, it’s clean, comfortable, and bustling with a quiet confidence that speaks volumes about the food.
The menu, as their tagline suggests, truly aims to “introduce you to Fabulous Peruvian food!” I started with the PAPA A LA HUANCAINA ($6.50), a dish I always gravitate towards. Boiled potatoes topped with that distinct, creamy yellow cheese sauce, it’s pure comfort. The sauce here was spot-on—rich, slightly spicy, and perfectly balanced. It’s a testament to how well a simple dish can shine when executed correctly. Next, I couldn't resist the CHICARRON DE CALAMARES ($8.95). These crispy calamari pieces, served with a vibrant criolla salsa, were fresh and tender on the inside, with a satisfying crunch. The salsa added a necessary brightness that cut through the richness.
For a lighter bite, the CHOROS A LA CRIOLLA ($8.25), boiled mussels marinated Peruvian style with chopped onions and tomatoes, was fantastic. The mussels were plump, and the marinade was zesty and herbaceous, a perfect opener.
Of course, at a Peruvian seafood spot, ceviche is non-negotiable. I tried the CEVICHE MIXTO ($11.95), which came with a generous mix of fish, shrimp, squid, and octopus, all 'cooked' in lemon juice and Peruvian spices. The "leche de tigre" (tiger's milk) was bright, tangy, and invigorating, a clear sign of fresh ingredients and skilled preparation. For a more adventurous palate, the CEVICHE TRES COLORES ($13.95) offered a visual and flavor spectacle, with different seafood components prepared in distinct sauces—fish in lemon, shrimp in aji amarillo, and octopus and squid in a lobster sauce. Each color brought its own subtle nuance to the palate.
I rounded out my meal with some sides of PLATANO FRITO ($3.25) and YUCA FRITA ($3.95). The sweet plantains were perfectly caramelized, and the yuca was crispy outside, fluffy inside—simple, but expertly done.
If you're making a day of it in Hollywood, perhaps after a thrill-seeking morning at Universal Studios Hollywood or before heading up to Griffith Observatory for those iconic sunset views, Natalie Peruvian Seafood is a fantastic, grounded choice for a meal. It's the kind of place that focuses on the heart of the dish, delivering consistent quality without any fuss. For a truly satisfying taste of Peru that feels like it came from a family kitchen, Natalie's is definitely worth seeking out.
