Feature Story
A day built around one meal
I was in Buffalo last week, stretching out a road trip after visiting a friend downstate. I’d heard good things about the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, and it seemed like the perfect way to spend a crisp autumn morning. Wandering through the stunning glasshouses, from the vibrant tropical plants to the serene desert collections, I was glad I made the detour. I even spotted the tranquil Japanese Garden nearby, making a mental note to return in spring when everything's in full bloom. After all that walking – almost as many steps as a ride on the nearby Buffalo Heritage Carousel, if I’d been feeling more whimsical – my stomach was definitely ready for lunch.
I’d done a quick search for places nearby, and Mothers Restaurant kept popping up. The description, “Dim lighting fosters a romantic feel at this cool bistro with an ever-changing, hand-scrawled menu,” caught my eye. As a longtime home cook, I appreciate a place that focuses on the food without unnecessary fuss, and an ever-changing menu usually signals a kitchen that likes to play with what’s fresh.
Stepping inside, the ambiance immediately felt right. It’s exactly as described: intimate, with a warm glow that makes you want to settle in. The hand-scrawled menu, presented on a chalkboard, felt personal, almost like a chef inviting you into their kitchen. It spoke of confidence and flexibility, a kitchen comfortable adapting to what’s best that day.
I started with the Raw Oysters on the Half Shell ($15.95). Fresh oysters are a simple pleasure, and these were perfectly briny and clean, served with a classic mignonette. It’s a good test of a kitchen’s attention to detail, and Mothers passed with flying colors. For something a little richer, I also tried the Lump Crab Cakes with Mixed Greens & Remoulade ($16.95). The crab cakes themselves were packed with sweet crab meat, minimal filler, and a golden crust that held everything together. The remoulade added a creamy, tangy counterpoint that brightened each bite.
Next, I couldn’t resist the Littleneck Clams steamed in Tomato Broth, Chorizo, Spinach, White Beans, and Roasted Garlic ($13.95). This dish was a revelation. The smoky chorizo played beautifully with the sweetness of the clams and the acidity of the tomato broth. The white beans and spinach added body and earthiness, making it feel less like an appetizer and more like a hearty, comforting stew. It’s a dish that warms you from the inside out, expertly balanced in flavor and texture.
My main course leaned towards indulgence: the Pork Cheek Gnocchi with Demi Glaze, Celery, Carrots, Onions, and Asiago ($17.95). The gnocchi were tender pillows, and the braised pork cheek was fall-apart tender, imbued with the rich, savory demi-glaze. The finely diced celery, carrots, and onions added a subtle crunch and sweetness, preventing the dish from being too heavy. It’s a masterclass in slow cooking, delivering deep, satisfying flavors. I also spotted the Lobster Gnocchi ($17.95) with shiitake, peas, asiago, and white truffle cream – another option I’d be keen to try on a return visit, showcasing their versatility with a core ingredient.
What makes Mothers stand out is its commitment to quality and execution without being pretentious. The prices feel fair for the care and thought put into each dish. It’s a place where you can tell the chefs love what they do, focusing on robust flavors and thoughtful combinations that make sense on the plate. If you find yourself exploring Buffalo, perhaps after a stroll through the botanical gardens or a ride on the carousel, Mothers Restaurant offers a genuine taste of comfortable elegance and genuinely delicious food. It’s the kind of spot you'll want to revisit, just to see what new delights are scrawled on that chalkboard.
