A day built around one meal
I found myself in Mesa recently, catching up with an old college buddy who’d moved out this way a few years back. We spent a good chunk of the morning strolling around Superstition Springs Center, mostly window shopping and just enjoying the sunshine and conversation. Later, after dropping him off, I had some time to kill and decided to swing by Slick City Action Park, thinking it might be a fun spot to take my nieces on a future visit. All that activity and fresh air worked up a proper appetite, and my thoughts turned to lunch.
That's how I ended up at Mekong Palace. I'd heard whispers about this place – a local cornerstone for "Hong Kong Style Dim Sum and Seafood." Google describes it as a "Traditional Chinese place specializing in dim sum, BBQ, hot pots & other Hong Kong-style favorites." Walking in, the vibrant, no-frills atmosphere immediately felt right; it's the kind of spot where families gather, and you can tell the kitchen is serious about its craft.
My focus, as it often is, gravitated towards the BBQ counter. There's something deeply satisfying about expertly prepared roasted meats, and Mekong Palace truly delivers. I started with the B.B.Q. Pork Slice ($10.95). It arrived with that beautiful, glossy sheen, the edges lightly caramelized, and the meat itself remarkably tender, imbued with that classic savory-sweet char siu flavor. It’s a dish that, when done right, is pure comfort, and this was definitely right. Next up was the Roasted Pork Belly ($12.95 per lb.). The crackle of its perfectly rendered, crispy skin was audible, giving way to succulent layers of meat and fat beneath. This isn't just about crunch; it’s about a textural symphony that only careful roasting can achieve.
Of course, no Hong Kong BBQ experience is complete without duck. I opted for the Half Roasted Duck ($14.50). Its skin was a deep, inviting mahogany, crisp yet yielding, and the meat was juicy and flavorful. It’s clear they pay attention to the details here, from the seasoning to the roast time. For those who want a broader taste, their B.B.Q. Combo Platter (2 Kinds) at $15.95 is an excellent way to sample a few of their standout offerings.
While my appetite was happily satisfied by the BBQ, it’s worth noting that their reputation for dim sum is well-earned, and their full menu promises a deeper dive into traditional Hong Kong favorites. The prices feel fair for the quality and portion sizes, making it a reliable choice for a satisfying meal without breaking the bank. It’s the kind of consistency and honest execution that keeps people coming back.
Before heading home, I considered a leisurely walk through Village Square At Dana Park, another pleasant spot nearby for an evening stroll. But first, a moment to appreciate a meal well-made. Mekong Palace isn't trying to reinvent the wheel; it’s simply mastering the classics. For anyone in Mesa looking for genuine Hong Kong flavors executed with care, this place is a solid, dependable choice that truly lives up to its promise.
