A day built around one meal
Okay, friends, confession time: I may have a *slight* obsession with Hawaiian food. So, when a follower messaged me raving about Makai Island Co. in Renton, I knew I had to check it out. I was already planning a weekend road trip to visit my friend Sarah, who lives near The Landing, so it was the perfect excuse to swing by.
And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! Tucked away not too far from the scenic Water's Table-Renton Restaurant, Makai Island Co. is a total gem. The atmosphere is super chill and welcoming, and the aroma of BBQ wafting through the air is instantly mouthwatering. It definitely stands out amidst the familiar chains in the area. Before heading over to Makai Island Co., we were debating stopping into Trenchers Kitchen & Tap for a pre-dinner appetizer, but decided to hold out.
First things first, you HAVE to try the 808 MIX PLATE ($17.95). Crispy shrimp, lumpia, spam, mac salad… it's a little bit of everything amazing, all on one plate. Seriously, the perfect sampler. I added the BEEF RIBS (+3) because, well, beef ribs. No regrets! I'm also dying to try the INIHAW PLATE ($15.95) next time, especially with the PORK RIBS (+2).
But Makai Island Co. is more than just BBQ. They have a whole section dedicated to "Island Faves," and it's hard to choose just one. Sarah opted for the classic LOCO MOCO ($15.95), and her eyes lit up. I almost went for the PULEHU SHORT RIBS (+3) from their BBQ Plates but the PIPKAULA RIB PLATE ($20.95) was calling my name. We even saw someone walk out with the UBE PANCAKES ($12.00) and almost regretted not ordering them. Next time, I'm adding the macadamia nuts (+1.50), too. They also have GARLIC NOODLES ($10.00), which are calling my name for a quick lunch.
What makes Makai Island Co. so special? It's the authenticity. They're clearly passionate about bringing real Hawaiian flavors to the PNW. And the portions are HUGE! Be prepared to share (or take home leftovers, which are just as good the next day).
After our feast, we considered grabbing a post-dinner drink at Whistle Stop Ale House, but we were both so stuffed we decided to head back to Sarah's place. It was a perfect way to round out a fun day of exploring Renton's food scene.
Honestly, if you're anywhere near Renton, you HAVE to make a trip to Makai Island Co. It's a taste of paradise right here in Washington! Tell them your girl sent you – and maybe I'll see you there!
