A day built around one meal
I was in Santa Cruz last week, stretching out a road trip after visiting a friend in the area, and decided to revisit some old haunts. A morning spent strolling the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, watching the waves and the occasional brave surfer, had worked up a real appetite. I even considered a quick detour to the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum & Botanic Garden, but the growl in my stomach won out. That’s how I found myself turning off the main drag and heading towards Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery, a spot I’d heard whispers about.
Stepping inside, Makai immediately felt like a breath of fresh air. It’s got that relaxed, unpretentious island vibe without leaning too heavily into kitsch. Warm wood, inviting lighting, and a hum of happy diners made it clear this wasn't just a quick bite kind of place; it was somewhere you could settle in. The menu, a thoughtful mix of Hawaiian and Pacific Rim influences, promised comfort and flavor.
I started with a few pupus, the Hawaiian answer to appetizers. The Hawaiian BBQ Pork Sliders ($16.00) were a revelation. The pork shoulder, smoked in-house over applewood, was meltingly tender, perfectly complemented by the bright pineapple coleslaw and a subtle fruit-infused BBQ sauce on those soft Hawaiian buns. It’s a dish that balances richness with a much-needed zing. Next up were the Crispy Bao Mi Tacos ($18.00). These had a delightful crunch and chew – house-smoked pork belly, fried crisp, glazed with hoisin, and tucked into bao buns with a fresh, vibrant slaw of mung beans, carrots, cucumber, and cilantro. Each bite was a textural and flavor journey. And for something a little different, the Crab Rangoon ($17.00) offered that satisfying crisp-creamy contrast, the sweet and sour sauce cutting through the richness beautifully.
For a main, I debated between several tempting options, but the Tamarind Pua'a ($22.00) caught my eye. This is Makai’s take on Kalua Pork, and it delivered. The applewood-smoked pork shoulder was succulent, shredded, and bathed in a tangy tamarind sauce, with diced seasoned mango adding a lovely fruity counterpoint. Served with rice and their house-original mac salad, it felt like a complete, soulful meal. My dining companion went for the Halibut Green Curry Bowl ($28.00), and the aroma alone was enough to make me regret not ordering one for myself. Fresh halibut simmered with vegetables in a vibrant green curry sauce, served over rice – it looked incredibly comforting and flavorful, and she confirmed it was.
What truly impressed me about Makai wasn’t just the clever flavor combinations, but the consistent execution. Every dish felt well-considered, from the quality of the ingredients to how they were prepared. The in-house smoking, the fresh slaws, the balance of sweet, savory, and tangy – it all speaks to a kitchen that understands *why* a dish works. It’s not about reinventing the wheel, but perfecting the spin. The prices felt fair for the quality and portion sizes, especially considering the care that clearly goes into each plate.
After such a satisfying meal, I felt ready for more exploring, perhaps even tackling the quirky illusions at The Mystery Spot or finally making it to the arboretum. Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery isn't just a place to eat; it’s a vital part of what makes a day out in Santa Cruz feel complete. Whether you’ve spent the morning at the Boardwalk, hiking near UC Santa Cruz, or solving mysteries, this spot offers a genuine taste of island hospitality and truly delicious food. If you're looking for a meal that's both comforting and exciting, with flavors that transport you, Makai is absolutely worth your time.
