A day built around one meal

I was stretching a long weekend road trip recently, making my way along the beautiful Mississippi River Valley, and found myself in La Crosse, Wisconsin. After a leisurely afternoon wandering through the serene Riverside International Friendship Gardens, and even a quick detour to snap a picture with the World's Largest Six-Pack (it's exactly what it sounds like, and surprisingly charming), I decided I needed a proper meal. My friend, who'd told me about the area, mentioned a spot called Lovechild, describing it as a "modern supper club."

Now, "supper club" often brings to mind a certain old-school charm, which I appreciate, but "modern" piqued my interest. Lovechild, housed in a stylish space not far from where families were still enjoying Riverside Amusement Park, strikes a fantastic balance. It’s got an understated elegance—comfortable, not stuffy, with a warmth that makes you want to settle in.

What truly impressed me, as someone who spends a lot of time in the kitchen trying to understand *why* a dish works, was the kitchen's clear understanding of flavor and execution. They’re not reinventing the wheel, but they’re perfecting it with fresh, seasonal ingredients.

We started with the Crispy Mortadella, Burrata, Peperonata, and Focaccia ($14.00). The mortadella, usually a deli counter staple, was pan-crisped to a delightful texture, offering a savory counterpoint to the creamy burrata. The sweet and tangy peperonata and a good piece of focaccia brought it all together. It was a simple idea, executed beautifully. Next, the Triple-Cooked French Fries with Horseradish Sauce ($10.75) arrived. You can tell a lot about a kitchen from its fries, and these were perfectly crisp, fluffy inside, and the horseradish sauce added a welcome, subtle kick without overpowering.

For mains, I leaned into the seafood, opting for the Baked Halibut with Salmoriglio Sauce, Calabrian Chilies, and Summer Vegetable Fregola ($38.50). The halibut was flaky and moist, perfectly cooked, and the salmoriglio, a bright lemon-herb sauce, cut through the richness beautifully. The Calabrian chilies provided just enough warmth to make it exciting, and the fregola, a pasta like tiny couscous, was a thoughtful textural addition. My dining companion chose the Pork Confit, with Spicy Red Wine Cabbage, Apples, and Pork Jus ($32.00). The pork was incredibly tender, fork-shredding, and the accompanying spicy red wine cabbage and apples provided a fantastic balance of sweetness, acidity, and warmth that truly complemented the rich meat.

To finish, we shared the Chocolate Cake with Whipped Coffee Mascarpone ($9.75). It was a classic done right—rich and decadent, but the coffee mascarpone was a genius touch, adding a lovely aromatic bitterness that kept it from being overly sweet. It was exactly the kind of satisfying end you hope for after such a well-crafted meal.

Lovechild delivers on its promise of a modern supper club. It's not about fuss or flashy trends, but about solid cooking, fresh ingredients, and a comfortable, confident approach to food that respects the classics while still feeling fresh. If you find yourself in La Crosse, perhaps after exploring the riverfront or taking in a bit of local quirk, Lovechild is a genuinely great spot to settle in for a meal that feels both special and deeply satisfying.
