A day built around one meal
I found myself in Thousand Oaks recently, stretching a road trip back home with a detour to finally see the Gardens of the World. It was a beautiful day, full of quiet contemplation among the various landscapes, and by the time I was done, my stomach was rumbling with purpose. I wasn't looking for anything fancy, just a solid, comforting meal. That's how I ended up at Los Dos Amigos, a spot I’d heard whispers about.
From the moment you step inside, it’s clear this isn't a place that chases trends. It's got that comfortable, lived-in feel – the kind of spot locals frequent, where the aroma of simmering sauces and grilled meats hangs invitingly in the air. The Google description calls it "hopping" and "comfy digs," and it's spot-on. There's an energy here, but it's a relaxed, family-friendly hum, not a frantic rush. The tagline, "Come Dine at our Mexican Seafood Grill," hints at a broad menu, and indeed, there’s plenty to explore.
I started with the Taquitos Rancheros for $6.50. Three perfectly crunchy taquitos, generously topped with cool sour cream and fresh guacamole. It’s a simple dish, but the balance of textures and flavors here is just right – a crisp shell yielding to savory shredded beef (or chicken), brightened by the creamy toppings. It’s a great way to kick things off.
For something more substantial, and if you’re sharing, the Nachos Super Machos at $8.50 are a seriously hearty plate. Imagine chips piled high with refried beans, melted cheese, lively salsa ranchero, sour cream, guacamole, and a scatter of jalapeños, all crowned with your choice of meat. It’s a satisfying, no-nonsense feast.
On the main course front, Los Dos Amigos shines with its traditional fare. I’m a big fan of a well-executed carnitas, and their Pork Carnitas for $9.95 didn’t disappoint. The pork was tender, with those lovely crispy bits that make you appreciate a slow-cooked dish. The Chile Verde (pork in green sauce), also $9.95, is another standout. The sauce has that deep, earthy heat that only comes from careful preparation, clinging perfectly to the chunks of pork. It’s the kind of dish that makes you feel like you’re eating home cooking.
Given their "Seafood Grill" claim, I also tried the Shrimp Quesadilla for $10.95. The shrimp were plump and well-seasoned, tucked into a cheesy tortilla with the usual generous accompaniments of sour cream, guacamole, and tomatoes. It’s a lighter, yet still satisfying option.
If you're looking for something with a bit of a kick, the Chipotle Grilled Chicken Breast for $10.95 is excellent. The chicken itself is grilled well, moist and flavorful, and the chipotle sauce adds a smoky, mild heat that elevates the dish without overpowering it. Alternatively, for a bit of fun, the Super Taco at $8.95 is a truly giant crunchy taco – a throwback done right.
Los Dos Amigos feels like a true neighborhood cornerstone, the kind of place you can count on for a good meal, whether you're fueling up for a hike to Paradise Falls or planning to let the kids burn off some energy at the Kids Adventure Garden. It's not about culinary acrobatics; it's about consistently good, honest Mexican food, served in a relaxed atmosphere at a fair price. It’s the perfect antidote to a long day of sightseeing, or just a Tuesday evening when you don't feel like cooking. If you find yourself in Thousand Oaks, craving warmth and flavor, Los Dos Amigos is well worth a stop.
