A day built around one meal
I was in Bismarck for a low-key weekend, visiting an old college friend and generally just stretching my legs with a bit of a road trip. We spent a beautiful morning strolling along The Landing, enjoying the wide-open views of the Missouri River. There’s something so grounding about the expanse of that water, and we even considered heading over to Chief Looking’s Village or the Dakota Zoo later in the afternoon.
But first, lunch, or more accurately, a snack that turned into a meal. Just a short drive away, past a couple of turns, we stumbled upon La Michoacana Mexican Snacks. From the outside, it’s unassuming, but the vibrant colors inside immediately caught my eye. This isn't your average ice cream shop; it’s a 'paleteria,' a traditional Mexican ice pop and snack shop, and it’s clear from the moment you step in that they take their craft seriously.
The paletas, or popsicles, are clearly the stars here. They come in an dizzying array of flavors, both cream and water-based, and what struck me immediately was the naturalness of the fruit. I started with a Pecan Cream popsicle ($4.70). It was rich, creamy, and tasted exactly like fresh pecans, not artificial flavoring. It felt like a comforting hug on a stick. For something completely different, the Mango with Chili water popsicle ($4.70) was a revelation—zesty, sweet, and with just enough of that chile warmth to make your tongue tingle without overwhelming the fruit. It’s incredibly refreshing and bright, perfect for cutting through the heat of the day.
Then there’s the Crazy Popsicle ($7.99). It’s exactly what it sounds like: a water-based popsicle (I chose mango) loaded up with chamoy, Tajín, spicy powder, chopped fruit, and tamarind sweets. It’s an adventure in every bite, hitting all the sweet, sour, salty, and spicy notes. It might sound intense, but it balances beautifully, creating a really fun, multi-layered experience.
But La Michoacana isn’t just about the sweet treats. Their 'antojitos,' or savory snacks, are equally compelling. The Chips Locos ($9.50) are a riot of flavor and texture: crunchy chips piled high with hot sauce, fresh cucumber, jicama, lime, and the intriguing addition of cueritos (pickled pork skin) and chamoy. It’s messy, it’s bold, and it’s utterly addictive. It’s the kind of snack that makes you appreciate how a handful of simple ingredients, when balanced just right, can create something truly special.
Their regular Corn ($5.90), served in a cup, is a masterclass in Mexican street food simplicity. Prepared with cream, mayonnaise, cheese, a touch of spicy sauce, and lime, it’s warm, savory, and deeply satisfying. And a simple Mango on a Stick ($5.50), perfectly ripe and dusted with Tajin and chamoy, is pure, unadulterated joy. It's the kind of snack you grab after an afternoon exploring, maybe after a drive to Chief Looking's Village or before heading to the Dakota Zoo.
La Michoacana feels like a true neighborhood gem, a place that delivers consistent quality and a real taste of tradition. The prices are fair, the portions generous, and the flavors are spot-on. It’s a place where you can taste the care and authenticity in every bite, whether you're craving something sweet, spicy, or a delightful combination of both. Next time you're in Bismarck, make a point to seek it out. You won't regret it.
