Feature Story
A day built around one meal
After a morning spent hiking the trails around La Leona Waterfall Adventure, scrambling over rocks and dipping into cool, natural pools, my wife and I found ourselves back in Tamarindo. We were in town for a few days, following a tip from a local about the excellent fishing, and had decided to dedicate one day to the hike before soaking up the beach town atmosphere. By lunchtime, we were ready for something substantial, but also something that felt a little apart from the usual beachside fare. That’s how we ended up at L' Estanco El Jardin Escondido.
The name itself, "The Hidden Garden," hinted at what awaited. Tucked back from the main road, the restaurant lives up to its name, offering a tranquil, open-air setting surrounded by lush greenery. It's the kind of place that invites you to slow down, to really savor your meal, a welcome respite after a vigorous morning. The vibe is relaxed but attentive, fitting perfectly with the *pura vida* rhythm of Guanacaste.
Leafing through the menu, it was clear this wasn't just another stop for quick bites. The offerings were a thoughtful blend of Mediterranean and Latin American influences, a testament to a kitchen that understands how good ingredients, handled with care, can truly sing. We started with the Peruvian Ceviche ($18.00), and it was a revelation. Fresh, perfectly diced fish, brightened with lime, cilantro, and just the right amount of aji pepper. It was a clean, zesty start, showcasing a real understanding of balance. We also shared the Stuffed Mushroom ($18.00), which arrived beautifully presented, earthy and savory, a comforting counterpoint to the vibrant ceviche.
For our main courses, I was drawn to the Tarragon Fish Filet ($40.00). Living in a coastal area, I’m always keen to see how local fish is treated. Here, it was flaky and moist, the delicate tarragon sauce complementing without overpowering the natural sweetness of the fish. My wife opted for the Asparagus Risotto ($26.00), a dish that often disappoints if not executed properly. This one was creamy and al dente, the asparagus still holding a slight snap, a testament to a kitchen that pays attention to technique. We considered the Lamb Tajine "Plum Sauces" ($43.00), intrigued by the global reach of the menu, but decided to save that for a potential return visit. The consistency we observed across our dishes gave us confidence it would be equally well prepared.
What makes L' Estanco special is not just the food, but how it all comes together. It feels like a genuine discovery, a place where you can unwind and enjoy a meal that’s both adventurous and deeply satisfying. It’s a bit off the main strip, but easy enough to find, and once inside, the outside world seems to melt away. We lingered for a while, chatting about our hike and the plans for the rest of our time in Tamarindo – maybe catching the Tamarindo Moonlight Market one evening for some local crafts, or simply spending more time exploring the town's vibrant streets and beaches.
If you're looking for a meal that offers depth and comfort, a place where the flavors are memorable and the atmosphere inviting, L' Estanco El Jardin Escondido is well worth seeking out. It's a true culinary gem in Tamarindo, a spot that respects its ingredients and its diners, delivering a consistently excellent experience.
