A day built around one meal
Sometimes the best finds are the ones you stumble upon when you're just stretching your legs. I recently found myself taking the scenic route home from a weekend trip up north, deciding to detour through some of Michigan's smaller towns. Lennon, a quiet little place, caught my eye. After a pleasant hour wandering through the exhibits at the Lennon Historical Museum, getting a feel for the area’s past, my stomach started rumbling with a clear demand for something substantial.
That's how I found Juan's Taqueria LLC. From the moment I stepped inside, the air was thick with the inviting scent of simmering meats and fresh tortillas – a promising sign. The space itself is straightforward and comfortable, exactly what you hope for in a local spot that puts its focus squarely on the food.
I started with a couple of their Birria Street Tacos ($3.99 each). The birria meat itself was incredibly tender, braised to perfection, and infused with those deep, aromatic spices. Served on corn tortillas with melted cheese, cilantro, and onion, they came with a side of consome for dipping. That consome isn't just broth; it's a concentrated essence of everything good about birria, rich and savory, elevating every bite.
Next, I ventured to the Shrimp Street Tacos ($3.99 each). These were a delightful contrast – grilled shrimp, perfectly cooked, laid on soft flour tortillas, topped with crisp cabbage and a bright, zesty homemade chipotle sauce. The sauce had just the right amount of tang and a gentle warmth that complemented the sweetness of the shrimp beautifully without overpowering it.
No visit would be complete without trying their Street Corn ($4.50). It was exactly what you want: sweet corn grilled and slathered with creamy sauce, cotija cheese, and a sprinkle of chili powder. A perfect balance of flavors and textures. While I didn't get to try everything, the Quesabirria ($12.99) caught my eye on the menu – a substantial 12-inch flour tortilla filled with that fantastic birria meat, cilantro, onion, and melted cheese, also served with consome for dipping. It looked like a hearty meal designed for serious comfort. To wash it all down, a refreshing Horchata ($4.25), creamy and subtly sweet with cinnamon, was the ideal companion.
What really impressed me was the consistency and care in the execution. Each component felt intentional, from the perfectly seasoned meats to the fresh toppings and thoughtful sauces. The prices are incredibly fair for the quality you receive, making it a place where you can easily try a few different things without breaking the bank. It's clear that Juan's isn't trying to reinvent the wheel, but rather to perfect the classics, delivering genuine, satisfying flavors.
Feeling thoroughly satisfied, I decided to take a leisurely stroll through Maple Creek Park, just a short drive from Juan's. The fresh air and quiet trails were a perfect way to digest. Later, before heading back on the main road, I popped into the Lennon Mercantile Co., a charming general store filled with local crafts and quirky finds. It was a nice reminder of the character that makes small towns so appealing.
Juan's Taqueria LLC isn't just another taqueria; it's a cornerstone of good, honest food in Lennon. If you're ever passing through this charming corner of Michigan, whether you've been exploring the local history, enjoying the natural beauty of the park, or just looking for a unique souvenir, make a point to stop in. You'll find a meal that's both comforting and thoughtfully prepared, leaving you with a warm feeling and a full stomach. It's the kind of reliable, flavorful spot that every town deserves.
