Feature Story
A day built around one meal
Okay, friends, you know I'm always on the hunt for amazing food, and this weekend's road trip to Tucson did NOT disappoint! I was actually in town visiting my bestie, Sarah, who recently relocated. We'd spent the morning reliving our childhoods at Trail Dust Town (seriously, that place is a blast from the past!), and were starting to get hangry. Sarah suggested we hit up this place called HUMO Cocina Mexicana, and I am SO glad she did.
First Impressions: Flavor Fireworks!
Located not too far from La Encantada, HUMO Cocina Mexicana is serving up some seriously flavorful Mexican food. It's the kind of place where you can tell they put love into every dish. The vibe is super chill and welcoming, perfect for a casual lunch or dinner. Plus, the menu is HUGE – so many amazing options!
Taco Time (and Quesadillas, and More!)
I was immediately drawn to their "Mix and Match" taco options. I ended up going with a carne asada taco and a birria taco ($14.99 for the combo), and both were incredible. The meat was so tender and juicy, and the tortillas were perfectly warmed. Sarah went for the 2 quesabirrias with consomé ($11.99) and let me steal a bite (or two!). The consomé was rich and flavorful, perfect for dipping. We were tempted to take the tacos up to Sabino Canyon Recreation Area for a picnic, but we devoured them too quickly!
Seriously, though, the menu is packed with goodies. They have amazing looking quesadillas loaded with your choice of fillings. The Asada/Birria quesadilla ($15.99) is definitely on my list for next time, but so is the Pastor/Carnitas ($11.99)! I also spotted some tempting "Special Tacos," like the Joss (Asada and green chili) for $3.75 and the L.A. (Asada and cheese) for $3.85. I saw someone order the Quesa-shrimp ($4.99) and it looked amazing!
For something a little heartier, they've got burros and chimichangas. I was eyeing the Birria burro ($12.99), but honestly, everything looked so good it was hard to choose.
What Makes HUMO Special?
What sets HUMO apart is the quality of the ingredients and the authenticity of the flavors. You can tell they use fresh, high-quality meat and produce, and the recipes are clearly rooted in tradition. It's not just another Mexican restaurant; it's a place that celebrates the rich culinary heritage of Mexico.
My Verdict
If you find yourself in Tucson, especially if you're checking out Trail Dust Town or planning a hike in Sabino Canyon, you absolutely HAVE to stop by HUMO Cocina Mexicana. Do yourself a favor and order a few different tacos to try, and don't skip the quesabirrias with consomé. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you! I know I will be back next time I am visiting Sarah!
