A day built around one meal
Okay, confession time: I drove to Jackson, MI, to visit my friend Sarah, but also because I'd been hearing whispers about this legendary place called Hinkley Bakery. You know me – I'm always on the hunt for the next best treat! And since Sarah lives super close to Sparks Foundation County Park, we figured a day of hiking followed by some well-deserved sweets was in order.
Let me tell you, Hinkley Bakery lives up to the hype. This family-run operation has been churning out donuts since 1913, and you can taste the history and care in every single bite. Their tagline is "Popular, family-run operation turning out a variety of frosted & glazed donuts since 1913," and it's so true.
First off, the *aroma* hits you the second you walk in. It's like a warm, sugary hug. The display case is overflowing with donuts, but I was laser-focused on one thing: their fried cake donut holes. And OH. MY. GOODNESS. I opted for a mix-and-match, because, duh. I grabbed a small bucket of the cherry, blueberry, plain, lemon and chocolate donut holes.
Let's break it down, shall we? The Cherry donut holes ($0.50 for one, or go big with a whole bucket for $6.50, $12.50, $18.50 or $24.50) had a tangy-sweetness that was just perfect. The Blueberry donut holes ($1.00 for one) were bursting with flavor. The Plain donut holes ($1.50 for one) somehow managed to not be boring! The Lemon donut holes ($2.00 for one) were zingy and the Chocolate donut holes ($2.50 for one) were rich and decadent. Each donut hole was perfectly fried – crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. They were so good, they barely made it out of the parking lot!
What makes Hinkley Bakery so special? It's not just the amazing donuts (though those are a huge part of it). It's the feeling you get when you walk in – the sense that you're supporting a local institution with a long and delicious history. After our sugar rush, we walked around Ella Sharp Park! It was nice to stroll around the park after all the donut holes.
If you're ever in the Jackson area, maybe after catching a show at Cascades Park, you HAVE to stop at Hinkley Bakery. Seriously, it's worth the detour. Get a mix of donut holes (you won't regret it), grab a coffee, and enjoy a taste of pure donut heaven. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you!
