A day built around one meal
Okay, y'all, let me tell you about my recent whirlwind trip to Birmingham! I was actually in town visiting my college roommate, Sarah, who just moved there. We were determined to explore the city and soak up all the Southern vibes. Of course, that meant finding some amazing food! After spending the morning marveling at the iconic Vulcan statue atop Red Mountain and learning about the city's history, I was famished. Sarah suggested we head to Helen, and oh my goodness, I'm SO glad we did.
Helen, described as a "Cool venue with a regional menu featuring burgers, seafood & meat plates, plus cocktails & wine," is exactly that – and more. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was buzzing with a cool, relaxed energy. It's the kind of place where you instantly feel welcome and ready for a good time.
First things first: drinks! Their cocktail menu is seriously impressive. I opted for the BELLA DONNA ($12.00) – a sparkling concoction of SEGURA VIUDAS CAVA, HAKU VODKA, HENDRICK'S, ANGOSTURA, and a brûléed sugar cube. It was the perfect blend of sweet, bubbly, and sophisticated. Sarah went with the SILVER BULLET ($14.00), a daring mix of HENDRICK'S GIN and blue cheese dry vermouth. She said it was surprisingly delicious! They also have an extensive wine list, from crisp whites like the GRÜNER VELTLINER ($12.00) to robust reds like the CABERNET SAUVIGNON ($18.00).
Now, let's talk about the food! We started with a few "Beginnings" to share, and I highly recommend you do the same. The Warm Angel Biscuits ($10) were melt-in-your-mouth amazing, served with whipped cane syrup butter and sea salt. Simple, yet utterly divine. We also indulged in the Crispy St. Louis Style Ribs ($17), slathered in Helen's signature white BBQ sauce and served with a tangy collard green slaw chow chow. The ribs were perfectly cooked and the sauce was unlike anything I've ever tasted. Finally, we HAD to try the Nduja Honey Bun ($15) with caramelized onions, garlic, thyme, and Eastaboga honey — the perfect sweet and savory combination. I'm still dreaming about it! Other standout menu items included the Smoked Amberjack Tartine ($14) and the Ember Roasted Bone Marrow ($15).
What makes Helen so special? It's the way they celebrate Southern ingredients and traditions while adding their own unique twist. The menu is creative and thoughtful, and the execution is flawless. The service was also top-notch – our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the food.
After our incredible meal, we decided to walk it off with a stroll through Railroad Park. The sunshine, the city views, and all the greenery were perfect for a post-meal reset. We even talked about visiting the Birmingham Botanical Gardens later in the week before my trip home.
If you're ever in Birmingham, you absolutely HAVE to experience Helen. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. It's more than just a meal; it's an experience. Go hungry, bring your friends, and prepare to be amazed! It’s officially on my list of Birmingham must-dos, and I can't wait to go back!
