Feature Story
A day built around one meal
I had a hankering for some local-style comfort food the other day. I was in Kailua-Kona, running some errands and decided to swing by Flight of Aloha, and afterward, my stomach was telling me it was time for lunch. Instead of the usual tourist spots, I wanted something real, something with that unmistakable island flavor. That's when I remembered hearing about Hawaii BBQ Deli.
It's not fancy, but it’s precisely that unpretentious vibe that makes it so appealing. You can tell it's a spot where locals gather, a place where the food speaks for itself. And let me tell you, it does.
A Feast for Sharing
I was tempted by a few different things, but the sheer variety of their catering menu caught my eye. After a little back and forth with the friendly guy behind the counter, I decided on a few items. I couldn’t resist the Teriyaki Chicken ($32.99), glistening with that perfect sweet and savory glaze. It had that slightly charred flavor that only comes from a real grill. The Kalua Pork with Cabbage ($35.99) was another must-try. The pork was tender and smoky, practically melting in my mouth, and the cabbage offered a welcome touch of freshness.
Since I was feeling particularly hungry, I also grabbed an order of the Garlic Shrimp ($35.99). They were plump, juicy, and swimming in a garlicky sauce that I happily mopped up with rice. The portions were generous – definitely meant for sharing. Next time, I'm bringing friends and getting one of their famous Pupu Platters. The small is $32.99, but I'm already eyeing the medium ($42.99) for a bigger group!
A Perfect Kona Day
After my satisfying meal, I walked along the waterfront, taking in the sights and sounds near Kailua Pier. There's always something happening there, whether it's fishing charters heading out or locals simply enjoying the ocean breeze. I even watched a few kids having a blast at Kamakana Playground – their laughter echoing across the park. It’s moments like these, simple and authentic, that make Kailua-Kona so special.
Before heading back, I grabbed some more of their steamed rice ($15.99). I was already looking forward to leftovers for dinner.
The Verdict
Hawaii BBQ Deli isn't about white tablecloths or fancy presentations. It's about good, honest food made with care and served with aloha. If you’re looking for a real taste of island-style barbecue, a place where you can relax, share a meal, and feel like you’re part of the community, then I wholeheartedly recommend giving them a try. It's become one of my go-to spots, and I suspect it will become one of yours too.
