A day built around one meal

I was passing through Springfield, stretching a road trip into a long weekend, when I decided to check out Fantastic Caverns. The idea of an underground river tour was too intriguing to pass up, and I figured I could grab some lunch nearby. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from the local food scene, but then I stumbled upon Haruno.

Google's description – "Relaxed eatery serves creative rolls & Japanese staples, plus a chic late-night offshoot next door" – was accurate, but it undersells the experience. From the moment I walked in, there was a calm, welcoming vibe. It wasn't overly fancy, just comfortable and clean, with a quiet hum of conversation.

I started with a selection of sushi. The Snow Crab Leg ($6.50) was delicate and sweet, while the Tako (Octopus) ($6.00) was perfectly textured, not rubbery at all. I also sampled the Unagi (Eel) at $4.00 a piece and the $6.00 Sake (Salmon), both classic for good reason. Everything tasted incredibly fresh. I also ordered a few pieces of the Tuna - Spanish Blue Fin-Highest Quality ($8.00) and I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of tuna. It was melt in your mouth good.

Beyond the sushi, Haruno's menu is extensive, but I wanted to focus on what they seemed to do best. Next time, I’m making a beeline for the Toro - Highest Quality Tuna Belly ($15.00), because if the standard tuna was that good, I can only imagine.

The location is convenient, too. I found myself thinking it would be fun to pair a visit with a trip to Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park. A leisurely stroll through the gardens after a delicious meal? Sounds like a perfect afternoon. Or, if you're traveling with kids, a visit to Dickerson Park Zoo followed by some excellent sushi would make for a memorable day.

Haruno exceeded my expectations. It's not trying too hard to be trendy or over-the-top, it just delivers consistently delicious food in a relaxed atmosphere. If you find yourself in Springfield, do yourself a favor and stop in. It's the kind of place that makes you feel like you've discovered a neighborhood gem – and that's a feeling worth chasing.
