Feature Story
A day built around one meal
Stretching a long drive through Arkansas recently, I decided to detour for a couple of days to revisit some of the state's natural beauty. After spending a morning walking around The Old Mill in North Little Rock, and then taking a scenic route towards the northeastern part of the state, I found myself in Rose Bud, ready for a proper meal. I wasn't looking for anything fancy, just good, honest food. Grumpy's Getaway caught my eye, a low-key spot that looked like it had a story to tell.
Stepping inside, the atmosphere was immediately welcoming – a comfortable hum of local chatter, folks enjoying their meals, and a friendly buzz that felt just right for a place called "Getaway." The décor leans into a classic diner-meets-casual-eatery vibe, unpretentious and geared towards making you feel at home. It’s the kind of place where you can easily unwind after a drive or a hike, perhaps even after exploring the historical marker at Louisiana Purchase State Park a bit further east.
I started with the Southwestern Egg Rolls ($7.99), a choice that often tells you a lot about a kitchen's frying game. These were crisp, not greasy, with a savory filling that had just enough spice to make them interesting without overpowering. The roasted red pepper dipping sauce added a nice sweet and tangy counterpoint. It’s a reliable starter, executed well. My eye also caught the Fried Green Tomatoes ($7.59) on another table, thin-sliced and golden, served with ranch—a classic done right.
For the main course, I was torn. Their menu has a good mix of comfort food staples. The Loaded Hamburger Steak ($15.99), a ¾ pound patty with grilled onions, peppers, bacon, sautéed mushrooms, and Swiss cheese, sounded incredibly hearty. But having hiked a bit earlier, I opted for something a little different: the Santa Fe Chicken Salad ($13.99). Sometimes, a well-constructed salad can be just as satisfying as a heavy plate, and this one delivered. Grilled chicken, roasted tomatoes and jalapeños, onions, cheese, all served on a fresh garden salad with a zesty spicy ranch dressing. It was substantial, fresh, and surprisingly flavorful – a testament to good ingredients and thoughtful assembly.
Another dish that caught my attention was the Popcorn Chicken ($14.99). I saw a plate go by, and the pieces looked hand-cut and hand-breaded, not your usual frozen variety. That kind of attention to detail, even on a seemingly simple dish, speaks volumes about a kitchen. For those with a sweet tooth or a taste for Southern classics, the Chicken and Waffle ($12.79) also looked like a solid contender.
Grumpy's Getaway isn't reinventing the wheel, and that's precisely its charm. It's about consistency, comfort, and delivering on the promise of good, honest food at fair prices. It’s the kind of spot you'd be glad to find after a long day, perhaps even after a scenic drive up towards Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area, knowing you'll get a satisfying meal without any fuss. If you find yourself passing through Rose Bud, or just need a dependable stop on a road trip through Arkansas, Grumpy's Getaway is a solid choice for a grounded, tasty meal. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best getaways are the ones that simply feed you well.
