A day built around one meal
Okay, y'all, I have a confession: I've been missing out! I've heard whispers, seen the drool-worthy photos, but I'd never actually experienced the magic of Gino's East until this weekend. I was in Chicago visiting my bestie, Sarah, and we decided to make a day of it downtown.
We started with a morning walk through Millennium Park, snapping pics with the Bean (of course!) and soaking up the city vibes. Sarah had been raving about Gino's East forever, so, naturally, we headed that way when lunchtime rolled around. The anticipation was real, people!
"Enduring chain for Chicago-style deep-dish & thin-crust pizzas, plus Italian sandwiches & salads," the search results read. I was there for the deep dish.
The moment I walked in, I knew I was in for a treat. The walls covered in graffiti give it such a fun, laid-back vibe. It's definitely a place you can feel comfortable kicking back and enjoying some serious comfort food.
First things first: appetizers! We started with the Famous Hand-Rolled Mozzarella Sticks ($10.76). Crispy panko breading, perfectly melted mozzarella… they were gone in minutes. We also grabbed an order of the Charred Brussels Sprouts ($10.45). I know, I know, Brussels sprouts might sound weird at a pizza place, but trust me on this one – the pancetta and garlic combo was *chef's kiss*.
But let's be real, the main event was the deep dish. We went with a classic sausage pizza, and OMG. The crust was thick and buttery, the sauce was tangy and flavorful, and the cheese…oh, the cheese! It was a glorious, melty mountain of deliciousness. Seriously, I think I saw an angel. Each bite was a perfect balance of flavors and textures, the rich tomato sauce cutting through the creamy cheese and savory sausage. I totally get why people are obsessed.
After stuffing ourselves silly, we decided to walk it off with a stroll towards Navy Pier. All those shops and people watching helped me digest all the pizza I had just consumed. It's always so lively, with the Ferris wheel and the boats bobbing on the water. We even caught a glimpse of a show at the Pier. And before heading home, a quick detour through Grant Park was a must to soak in the greenery and cityscape views before the sun set.
Gino's East is more than just a pizza place; it's an experience. From the graffiti-covered walls to the incredibly delicious food, it's a Chicago institution for a reason. They also have sandwiches like the Italian Beef ($14.50) or the Eggplant Parmesan ($11) if pizza isn't your thing. I might try the Sticks & Dips next time ($16.75)!
If you're in Chicago, especially if you're hitting up Millennium Park, Navy Pier, or Grant Park, you HAVE to make a stop at Gino's East. Go hungry, bring your friends, and prepare to have your deep-dish dreams come true. Trust me, you won't regret it!
