A day built around one meal
Okay, friends, you KNOW I'm always on the hunt for those special spots that are more than just a meal, they're an experience. This weekend, I took a little road trip to visit my college buddy, Sarah, who just moved to Alexandria, VA. We spent the morning strolling along the Old Town Alexandria Waterfront, soaking up the sun and watching the boats go by. By the time lunchtime rolled around, we were both starving! I remembered a bunch of you DM'ing me about Founding Farmers, so we decided to give it a shot.
And let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint!
Founding Farmers Alexandria is a self-described "cooperative-grower-owned spot serving farm-to-table-themed American fare in rustic digs." That's a mouthful, but it perfectly sums up the vibe. The inside is warm and inviting, with this cool, slightly farmhouse-y feel. It felt very authentic, not cookie-cutter at all. I really appreciated that!
We went for brunch and spent a solid 10 minutes just staring at the menu. Everything sounded SO good. I finally settled on the Crab Cake Benedict ($18.99), because, well, I'm a sucker for a good Benedict. Sarah went for the Shrimp & Grits ($18.99), and we decided to split a side of their famous Skillet Cornbread & Honey Butter ($7.99). Seriously, that cornbread is worth the trip alone. So fluffy, so moist, and that honey butter? Forget about it! My Benedict was divine – perfectly poached eggs, generous lumps of crab, and hollandaise sauce that was *chef's kiss*. Sarah was equally thrilled with her Shrimp & Grits. We were both practically licking our plates clean. Next time, I'm going for the Founding Farmers Breakfast ($16.99). Two eggs, potatoes and choice of meat sounds like the perfect way to start the day. I also have my eye on the French Toast ($12.99) for something sweet!
What I loved most about Founding Farmers is that you can really taste the freshness. You know they're using quality ingredients, and it makes all the difference. It’s also clear that they are dedicated to supporting local farmers. After brunch, needing to walk off some of that delicious food, we drove a short distance over to Dora Kelley Nature Park for a leisurely walk through the woods. So peaceful and a perfect way to end the afternoon!
Before heading back home, I had to make a quick detour to Tysons Corner Center – I needed to grab a gift for my sister's birthday. It's so convenient having so many options nearby!
If you’re ever in the Alexandria area (or even if you're not!), I HIGHLY recommend checking out Founding Farmers. It's more than just a restaurant; it's an experience. Seriously, treat yourself. You deserve it!
