El Zarape: A San Diego Gem for the Thoughtful Palate
Sometimes, the best meals are found when you're not even looking for them. My recent stop at El Zarape in University Heights proved that some places just get it right, serving up honest, flavorful Mexican fare that truly satisfies.

A day built around one meal
The other day, I found myself with a rare free afternoon in San Diego. I was stretching out a road trip before heading home, and decided to spend some time exploring. I’d started my day with a leisurely stroll through Seaport Village, watching the boats, and then wandered over to Balboa Park, just soaking in the architecture and the vibrant atmosphere. Later, I even made a detour to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, imagining what life was like in early California. All that walking, naturally, built up a formidable appetite.
I was in University Heights when the hunger really hit, and a place called El Zarape caught my eye. The Google description mentioned a "lively spot" with "folk art," and their self-proclaimed tagline: "The Best Mexican Food and Seafood in University Heights!" – well, that’s a bold claim. As a longtime home cook, I appreciate that kind of confidence, but I’m always curious to see if a place delivers on its promise. Stepping inside, the aroma of sizzling meat and warm tortillas immediately told me I was in for a treat.
El Zarape is the kind of place that knows its strengths and plays to them consistently. It’s not about flashy presentations; it’s about good, honest cooking. I started with a classic: the Two Fish Tacos Combo for $6.25. The fish, whether batter-fried or grilled, was impeccably cooked—tender and flaky inside, with a slight crispness outside, nestled in fresh tortillas with just the right amount of cabbage and crema. It’s a simple dish, but getting the fish right is key, and they nail it here. It’s a dish I often make at home, and I appreciate when a restaurant shows the same care.
Seeing the breadth of the menu, I couldn’t resist trying a few more things. The #1 Lobster Enchilada and Fish Taco for $7.75 was a revelation. The lobster was sweet and perfectly cooked, not rubbery, enveloped in a rich sauce that spoke of careful simmering. And if you’re looking for value, their combination plates are where it’s at. The Carne Asada Burrito Combo for $6.25 offered a generously stuffed burrito with flavorful, well-seasoned carne asada, along with rice and beans. It’s a hearty, satisfying meal that truly feels like a bargain.
For those who appreciate a good chile, the #10 Pork Chile Verde for $7.50 is a winner. The pork was fall-apart tender, bathed in a vibrant, tangy green sauce that had a pleasant, lingering warmth without being overwhelmingly spicy. It's clear they take their time with their sauces, building layers of flavor. I also eyed the Breakfast Burrito Supreme for $4.75 – a fantastic deal for what I’m sure is a substantial morning meal, perfect if you're starting your day exploring the nearby parks.
What makes El Zarape stand out is not just the price, but the execution. Every dish I sampled tasted fresh, balanced, and prepared with an obvious understanding of what makes Mexican food so comforting and delicious. The vibrant folk art on the walls adds to the lively, welcoming atmosphere without being distracting. It truly feels like a neighborhood institution that genuinely cares about the food it serves.
If you find yourself in San Diego, perhaps after a day of exploring Seaport Village, Balboa Park, or the historical charm of Old Town, and you’re craving a meal that feels both authentic and satisfying, make your way to El Zarape. It’s a place that delivers on its promise, offering a taste of San Diego that's both memorable and genuinely good.
