A day built around one meal
Lagos has a way of drawing you in. On this particular trip, I was following a tip from a local I'd met further north, someone who insisted I spend a day soaking up the town's unique blend of history and coastal energy. After a morning spent exploring the winding paths and natural beauty that reminded me a bit of McKinney Falls State Park's serene trails – though the Algarve’s distinctive flora certainly gives it its own character – I found myself near the bustling energy that, in a more relaxed, European way, called to mind the vibrant buzz around a place like Daytona Lagoon, with families enjoying the sun and the glint off the water. My stomach was rumbling, and I was ready for something substantial, but not overly formal.
That’s how I ended up at Don Gull, a spot tucked away just enough from the main tourist drag to feel like a discovery. The vibe is welcoming, a mix of modern comfort and understated Portuguese charm. It’s the kind of place where you can settle in, watch the world go by, and feel genuinely at ease. As a seasoned traveler, I appreciate an establishment that understands both efficiency and allowing you to linger.
One of the first things you’ll encounter in Portugal is the *couvert*, the appetizers brought to your table that you can choose to accept or decline. At Don Gull, this isn’t just an afterthought. Their Marinated Olives for $1.80 were plump, seasoned just right, and a perfect start. But the real standout among the small plates was the Duck Mousse with Jamaican Pepper and Red Fruit Coulis ($4.20). It was a beautifully smooth creation, the warmth of the pepper playing off the sweetness of the fruit, a clear signal that this kitchen wasn’t afraid to innovate within a traditional framework. It’s always worth checking out the couvert here, as it sets the stage.
Moving onto the main event, the menu offers a range of small plates designed for sharing, though frankly, some are so good you’ll want them all to yourself. I started with the Deep Fried Tuna Balls ($9.90), served with a sweet chili and oyster mayo. These were crispy on the outside, moist and flavorful within – a delightful and unexpected take on a classic flavor profile. The Grilled Octopus ($14.90) followed, and it was executed flawlessly, tender with just the right char, accompanied by a sweet potato puree and a vibrant roasted pepper salad. It’s a dish that relies on perfect technique, and Don Gull delivered.
I also couldn't resist the Seared Tuna ($14.80), presented with a red onion marinade, nori seaweed, and a hint of wasabi mayo. The tuna was ruby-red and perfectly seared, showcasing the quality of the local seafood. For something a bit more indulgent, the Royal Torteloni with Burrata ($14.80) was a revelation. Filled with lobster and crab, bathed in a rich seafood cream, and topped with a generous dollop of creamy burrata, it was decadent without being heavy, a testament to the kitchen’s ability to combine flavors thoughtfully. Finally, the Veal Croquette ($9.90) with its roasted garlic truffled mayo was a bite of pure savory comfort, perfectly crispy and rich.
What makes Don Gull truly special is the consistent execution and the thoughtful twists on familiar dishes. It’s not just about good ingredients; it’s about understanding how to make those ingredients sing, whether it’s a simple olive or a complex pasta dish. The prices are fair for the quality, making it an excellent stop for anyone looking for a memorable meal in Lagos.
After such a satisfying meal, a leisurely stroll was in order. A walk through Freedom Park Lagos, with the evening air cooling the day’s heat, was the perfect way to cap off an afternoon of discovery. If you find yourself exploring the Algarve, with a day spent in charming Lagos, Don Gull is a stop I can wholeheartedly recommend. It’s a place that genuinely adds to the fabric of a wonderful travel experience, leaving you with both a full stomach and a deeper appreciation for the region’s culinary spirit.
