A day built around one meal
My recent trip to Los Angeles was a chance to extend a visit with an old friend into a proper few days of exploring. After a brisk morning walk through Griffith Park, enjoying the sprawling views of the city waking up, my stomach was rumbling for something beyond the usual. I wanted a treat, something substantial but not heavy, and certainly a good cup of coffee. That's how I found myself turning off the main drag and into the welcoming glow of Crafted Donuts.
The place itself is modest, clean, and has that inviting hum of a neighborhood spot. No pretense, just the smell of freshly baked goods and good coffee. As someone who appreciates a well-made dish at home, I’m always looking for places that focus on execution rather than just flash. Crafted Donuts, thankfully, leans heavily into the former.
The display case was a vibrant mosaic of colors and textures. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, but I tend to gravitate towards the tried and true alongside something a little more adventurous. I started with their Classic Glazed ($3.25), because a good glazed donut tells you everything you need to know about the quality of the dough. This one was airy, with a gentle chew, and the glaze wasn't overly sweet, letting the subtle yeasty flavor of the donut shine through. It was exactly what you hope for in a classic: simple, well-made, and profoundly satisfying.
Next, I ventured into their more creative offerings. The Brown Butter Pecan ($4.25) caught my eye, and it delivered on its promise. The nuttiness of the browned butter glaze was deep and warm, complementing the crunch of the pecans without being cloying. It felt thoughtfully constructed, each element playing its part. I also couldn't resist the Lemon Poppy Seed ($3.75). The bright, zesty lemon glaze cut through the richness beautifully, and the poppy seeds added a pleasing, subtle texture. It was like sunshine in a bite, a perfect counterpoint to the richer options.
To wash it down, a robust cup of their Drip Coffee ($2.25) was exactly what I needed. It was well-balanced, not bitter, and served at a perfect temperature – a simple pleasure often overlooked. Later, intrigued by their espresso menu, I opted for an Iced Americano ($3.50), which proved to be just as consistent. The espresso shot had a pleasant crema and a smooth finish, making for a refreshing afternoon pick-me-up.
What makes Crafted Donuts stand out isn't just the individual components, but the evident care that goes into each one. There’s a consistency in the product that speaks to a real understanding of baking. It’s comfort food, elevated by precision. You get the sense that they truly care about making a good donut, and that makes all the difference.
Walking out with my box, I considered heading over to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County later in the day, or maybe catching a show at Universal CityWalk Hollywood. But first, another walk to enjoy the sunshine and perhaps a second donut. Crafted Donuts isn't just a quick stop; it's a place where you can pause, enjoy something genuinely well-made, and recharge before diving back into the buzz of LA. It’s the kind of reliable spot that makes a busy day feel a little more manageable, a little sweeter.
