A day built around one meal
A few weekends ago, I found myself meandering along the Jersey Shore, stretching a road trip into a proper exploration. After a pleasant, brisk walk along Jenkinson’s Boardwalk, I felt that familiar rumbling in my stomach. I wasn't looking for anything fancy, just good, fresh food. That’s when I remembered Crab Shack, nestled in Brick Township. It’s the kind of place that quietly gets on with doing things right, a quality I’ve come to appreciate more and more over the years.
Stepping inside, the aroma of steamed seafood immediately put me at ease. It’s a no-frills spot, the kind with communal paper rolls at the table, a clear sign that things are about to get delightfully messy – in the best way possible. For a home cook like me, these places are a treasure. They remind you that excellent food doesn’t need fanfare, just quality ingredients and a steady hand.
Crab Shack’s menu, as its name suggests, leans heavily into crab, and for good reason. They offer a selection of King, Snow, and Dungeness crab, all simply steamed to perfection. My preferred choice, the Snow Crab, was sweet and tender, each shell easily cracked, revealing succulent meat. For those who like to start with something a bit more hands-on, their Claws at $15.00 are a fantastic choice, rich and buttery. But it’s not just about the crab; the Steamers are always a good call, perfectly tender and briny, ready to be dipped in drawn butter.
What truly sets a place like Crab Shack apart is the consistent execution of straightforward dishes. They understand that when you have fresh seafood, you don’t need to overcomplicate it. I saw plenty of diners enjoying their raw Oysters, glistening and fresh, a testament to the daily catch. If you’re not in the mood for shellfish, their “Pick a Fish” option ($32) lets you choose from daily selections like Fluke or Cod, prepared either broiled or blackened. I opted for broiled Cod, and it was flaky, moist, and perfectly seasoned – a simple pleasure.
For a more casual bite, their Fish Sandwich ($10.00) or the Small Fish + Chip ($13.00) are solid, well-portioned choices that hit the spot without weighing you down. The batter on the fish is light and crisp, not greasy, which for me is the mark of a kitchen that cares.
After a meal like that, I usually need a good walk. Brick Township offers plenty of ways to stretch your legs. A visit to Cattus Island County Park, with its serene trails and nature center, is always a welcome antidote to a satisfying meal. Or, for a scenic drive and some fresh air, the views from Mantoloking Bridge County Park are excellent. It’s these quiet moments, enjoying good food and then exploring the local landscape, that truly make a day.
Crab Shack isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel; it’s simply ensuring that every turn of the wheel is smooth and reliable. If you’re in the area, perhaps after a day spent by the shore or exploring the natural beauty of the local parks, and you’re craving honest-to-goodness seafood, Crab Shack is a dependable spot that truly delivers on its promise of fresh, comforting fare.
