Feature Story

A day built around one meal

Driving back west after a weekend jaunt into the Superstition Mountains, I decided to take a route through Mesa, just to see what was new. I’d heard about Slick City Action Park opening up, and while it’s not exactly my speed anymore, I was curious to see the scale of it. But before any of that, the rumble in my stomach reminded me it was well past lunchtime. That’s how I found myself pulling into a modest plaza, drawn by the simple, confident promise of a sign: "Fine Vietnamese Food" at Com Tam Thuan Kieu.

The exterior is unassuming, much like many great neighborhood spots, but stepping inside, you find a clean, comfortable, and inviting space. It feels like a place where regulars gather, a testament to consistency and good cooking. As a home cook who appreciates the 'why' behind a delicious dish, I immediately felt at ease. The menu, extensive but clear, told me this wasn’t about flash, but about solid execution.

I started with the THUAN KIEU KHAI VI DAC BIET (9.99), a house special appetizer platter. It's a fantastic way to sample their breadth, featuring delicate shrimp, savory charbroiled meatball, a wonderfully crispy bean curd skin with shrimp, a classic eggroll, and a flavorful beef roll. Each component was distinct and perfectly fried or grilled. The PHAN TAU HO KY (8.99), their house special bean curd skin with shrimp, truly stood out—the bean curd was impossibly delicate, almost shattering, giving way to a rich, fragrant shrimp filling. For a more familiar bite, the PHAN CHA GIO (5.75), crispy egg rolls, were spot-on: golden, crisp, and filled with fresh ingredients. And the PHAN GOI CUON (3.50), fresh shrimp and sliced pork rolls, were a study in balance, the cool, fresh herbs and vermicelli contrasting beautifully with the rich peanut sauce.

Of course, with "Com Tam" in the name, I knew I had to explore their broken rice dishes. Com tam, literally "broken rice," is a Vietnamese staple where the rice grains are fractured during milling, giving them a distinct texture that I find just soaks up the flavors of accompanying dishes beautifully. While I enjoyed several of their traditional broken rice plates, I also couldn’t resist their BANH XEO (6.50). This savory crepe, golden and crisp, filled with shrimp and pork, is served with a generous plate of lettuce and fresh herbs. The joy of tearing off a piece, wrapping it in lettuce, and dipping it into fish sauce is a simple pleasure, expertly delivered here. For those seeking vegetarian options, the COM DAU HU CHAY (6.50), broken rice with perfectly prepared tofu, looked like a comforting and wholesome choice.

What I appreciate most about Com Tam Thuan Kieu is the care. You can taste it in the freshness of the ingredients, the precise cooking, and the simple, honest flavors that really shine. It's the kind of place that leaves you feeling satisfied and nourished, ready for whatever the day brings—whether it's browsing the shops at Superstition Springs Center or exploring the family-friendly attractions at Arizona Boardwalk just a bit further down the road. This isn't a place for fads; it's a place for well-executed, consistent Vietnamese cooking, and that, to me, is the real draw.
