Feature Story
A day built around one meal
I was in Phoenix last weekend, mostly running errands and stretching my legs after a long drive. I spent the morning at Arizona Falls, watching the water cascade down the artful sculptures – a surprisingly peaceful spot in the middle of the city. By lunchtime, I was craving something light and healthy. That's when I stumbled upon California Fish Grill.
I'll admit, I'm usually wary of chains, but the promise of grilled seafood was too tempting to pass up. And honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. This isn't your typical fast-casual fish joint. The focus is on fresh flavors and simple preparations, letting the quality of the seafood shine.
What to Order
I started with the Ahi Poke ($9.99). The tuna was incredibly fresh, and the marinade had just the right amount of soy sauce and sesame oil. It was the perfect light bite to whet my appetite. I also tried the Parmesan String Beans ($6.99), and they were perfectly crisp-tender with a savory coating of parmesan. For my main course, I went with the Grilled Shrimp & Swai with Caesar ($13.99). The shrimp were perfectly cooked, and the swai (a mild white fish) was flaky and moist. The Caesar salad was a classic done right, with a creamy dressing and plenty of Parmesan cheese. The portions were generous without being overwhelming. My friend tried the Brussels Sprouts with Balsamic Glaze ($5.50) and loved them. Next time, I'm definitely trying the Atlantic Salmon ($15.99) or maybe even the Branzino ($15.50).
Why It Works
What sets California Fish Grill apart is their commitment to quality ingredients and straightforward cooking. They don't try to overcomplicate things. The fish is fresh, the sauces are flavorful, and the prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, making it a great place to grab a quick lunch or a casual dinner. After lunch, I considered a stroll through the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix, but the afternoon heat was a bit intense, so I decided to head back to my hotel. Maybe next time I'll explore Enchanted Island Amusement Park with my niece and nephew.
Final Thoughts
California Fish Grill isn't trying to reinvent the wheel, and it doesn't need to. It offers consistently good seafood at a fair price. If you're in the area and looking for a healthy and satisfying meal, it's definitely worth a stop. It's a welcome break from the usual fast-food options, and it's a great way to refuel after a day of exploring Phoenix.
