A day built around one meal
My recent trip to Redondo Beach wasn't exactly planned around a culinary adventure, but life often delivers its best surprises that way. I was in the area, stretching out a road trip before heading home, and decided to check out the Wonder of Dinosaurs with a friend’s kids. After marveling at prehistoric beasts and a good long walk, we were ready for something substantial. The Redondo Beach Pier beckoned with its ocean breezes, and a stroll past the various shops and the general buzz of Redondo Boardwalk LLC built up a serious appetite.
That's when The Bull Pen caught my eye. Its unassuming exterior hinted at something established, a place that didn’t need to shout to be noticed. Inside, the Google description's "vintage decor" wasn't just flair; it felt like a warm embrace. Dark woods, comfortable booths, and a certain timelessness immediately put me at ease. This wasn't trying to be the newest, trendiest spot; it was a classic, serving steaks, seafood, and cocktails, and it felt right.
First impressions often start with the small things, and the appetizers here set a promising tone. We kicked things off with their Shrimp Cocktail ($13.95), perfectly chilled with a bright, zesty sauce – a simple pleasure executed flawlessly. The Sauteed Mushrooms ($8.50) were another testament to how much flavor can come from quality ingredients handled with care, rich and earthy without being greasy. And let's not forget the Cheese Bread ($6.50); crispy, garlicky, and utterly satisfying, it was a proper foundation for the meal to come. These aren't flashy dishes, but they're the kind you crave for their sheer comfort and consistency.
When it came to the main event, the menu offered a solid lineup. My friend opted for the NY Steak ($22.95), which arrived with a perfectly golden onion ring, cooked to a precise medium-rare. The steak itself was tender and flavorful, exactly what you'd hope for from a classic cut. I was intrigued by the Bull Pen's Medallions of Beef ($27.95), described as sliced filet and mushrooms sautéed in wine, butter, and lemon. It was a delightful surprise – fork-tender beef, swimming in a vibrant sauce that highlighted, rather than masked, the quality of the meat. It had a lightness that many steakhouse dishes lack, a testament to thoughtful preparation. They also have a fantastic Coulette Steak 10 oz for $22.95 if you’re looking for a great value cut.
While we enjoyed our meals, there was a gentle hum of conversation and the promise of live music later in the evening, adding another layer to the restaurant's appeal. It's the kind of place where you could easily spend hours, savoring a cocktail and good company. And yes, I made sure to "Ask About The Bull Pen's Special Today!" – a reminder that even in a classic spot, there’s always something new to discover.
The Bull Pen isn't about reinventing the wheel; it’s about perfecting it. It's a testament to the enduring appeal of a restaurant that prioritizes well-executed dishes, a welcoming atmosphere, and consistent quality. After a day exploring Redondo Beach, from prehistoric creatures to the ocean's edge, finding such a grounded, satisfying meal felt like hitting a culinary jackpot. If you're looking for a reliably good meal in a place with character, The Bull Pen is a solid bet.
